Eastern Suburbs: Skyward Bound, Community Grounded An ambitious rezoning proposal on New South Head Road aimed at redefining the amalgamted site's architectural and social landscape is in the final stages of planning, with gateway determination issued mid-2023. The site's new planning framework will facilitate a transformative mixed-use development that is visionary in scope and grounded in community benefits. In particular, the site's building height and FSR have improved to 46 metres (from 14.5 metres) and 5:1 (from 1.5:1). The existing streetscape of New South Head Road features inconsistent typologies, fragmented built scales and low pedestrian amenities. Development of the sites will provide a much-needed opportunity to enhance the consistency of built form along the northern side of New South Head Road, as well as benefit the streetscape. Graduate Student in Landscape Architecture & Urban Design | Championing Social Justice, Sustainability, and Inclusive Communities through Design
The field of landscape architecture needs to address the moral and ethical implications of the projects we take on. Historically our field has been complicit in the displacement of communities of color through highway construction, urban renewal projects, and redlining. And these mistakes carry forward to the current day. From years long construction projects causing the failure of large and small businesses along 16th Street, large suburbian gentrification projects in Aurora, and creating a Larimer Square that is unaffordable to nearly everyone but the wealthy, we must ask ourselves what role we play in the destruction of our city.

The living roof at 145 Biltmore was recently honored with a 2024 NCASLA Recognition Award in the General Design category. 🎉 This multi-unit residential urban infill project is located within the impacted French Broad River watershed, and the vegetated roof serves as a stormwater control measure, setting a new standard of resilience by reimagining a rooftop as infrastructure with the dynamic beauty of a wildflower meadow. For this project, Living Roofs, Inc. designed a custom green roof system to maximize stormwater benefits and ease the building’s impact on existing public infrastructure. As a result, the site now issues less stormwater runoff than before development, helping alleviate local flooding and waterway impairment. In addition to acting as a stormwater control, the roof addresses regional climate challenges including biodiversity loss and urban heat island effect. Its diversity of native plant species improves air quality and creates a pollinator sanctuary and migratory refuge. The site is crowned by a cool and vibrant space in an area of the city identified as having the highest heat vulnerability (NASA.gov). Architecture by MHAworks; Vegetated roof: Living Roofs, Inc. This article, "Under the Bridge" by Urška Škerl, really sparked my interest when looking through Landezine. The underpass designs that are highlighted in the writing are thoughtful, intentional, and inspirational. These often overlooked spaces are definitely something to consider and transform as designers. As many Landscape Architects begin to look into the creation of land bridges (ecological designs that bridge gaps between nature, overhead) I think we should also consider how to bridge social, cultural, and ecological gaps using space that lies below. If you want to give the article a read: https://lnkd.in/eGr3TvDs
