Nurses are the backbone of PIH, providing lifesaving care and accompanying patients every step of the way. Over 50% of our clinical workforce are nurses and midwives. Our Nurses as Change Agents Program (NCAP) is transforming nursing care and leadership. By investing in training and development, we empower nurses to lead and innovate. As of March 2024, Northern Ireland had 17,746 full-time equivalent registered nurses and midwives, reflecting a steady increase over the years. While half of these professionals are starting out in band 5 roles, many are moving into higher bands (6-7), and a select few (5%) are taking on leadership positions. However, despite the growth, there’s growing concern that the increase in nursing staff isn’t matching the rising demand for healthcare. Rita Devlin from the Royal College of Nursing in Northern Ireland has raised alarms about certain areas like learning disability nursing, where staff numbers have dropped significantly since 2011. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring our nursing workforce can meet the needs of the community. #nursingnews #medlocums #northernireland #nursingnumbers #latestnews

The European Commission, DG GROW and DG SANTE have a clear message: we need EU legislation and concrete actions to protect and develop the nursing profession. It is clear that the impact of the EFN on EU policy is highly appreciated. But to sort out the EU nurses' shortages, we need to strengthen NNAs and upscale achievements, such as safe staffing levels and APN. Everybody realizes we need EU action now! #frontlinenurses #nursing #resilience #preparedness

Basic Emergency Care (BEC) for nurses and midwives: evidence, impact and outcomes There are over 28 million Nurses and Midwives globally, making up 55% of the healthcare workforce. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) Nurses and Midwives are the main provider of healthcare to large populations. Nurses and Midwives are critical to preserving lives and guaranteeing that vulnerable people receive timely emergency care. The emergency care training that Nurses and Midwives receive varies greatly and many receive insufficient or no training, to acquire these potentially life-saving skills. As a result, many of them lack the knowledge necessary to offer basic emergency care. One out of every two fatalities in LMICs is attributable to conditions that can be treated with emergency care.
