Still nursing at 83, Rosemary Power remains a staunch union member and whenever she gets the chance to share her wisdom with young nurses and midwives, her message is clear: Join the union! Inspired to become a nurse after witnessing the impact of war on her father, who lost a leg during the Battle of Flanders, Rosemary began her four-year nursing training program at the age of 17 at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. “I absolutely loved it. I had never known anything like it”, Rosemary recalls. Throughout her career, spanning over six decades, Rosemary worked in various nursing settings - theatre, general wards, aged care and her biggest passion, mental health. As a member of the Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union (QNMU) for more than 50 years, Rosemary has always been a strong advocate for safe staffing levels. As the ANMF celebrates 100 years of advocating for its members this year, Rosemary says she remains confident that the ANMF can continue representing the professions for another hundred years and beyond. “I thought I’d get a headstart and join the union to understand what nursing is all about outside the theory or academic side of it,” recalls Victorian Nurse, Francis. Following his degree, Francis stayed locally and undertook his graduate year in regional Victoria, where he developed his passion for mental health nursing; taking up a full-time position at the hospital. Francis began his nursing journey amid the COVID-19 pandemic – like many graduates at the time, Francis faced challenges finding their footing. Francis reached out to the ANMF, specifically the Victorian Branch’s Graduate and Final Year Student Support Officer, Alice Pemberton for guidance. He received support, encouragement, and connections to support services, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Health Program Victoria (NMHPV), to help him navigate the early challenges and come out stronger. Many of the original members of the Australian Nursing Federation (now ANMF) were visionary leaders and advocates for nurses and women. They laid the foundations for the ANMF’s achievements today. Evelyn Augusta Conyers was one of the many trailblazers in Australian nursing and instrumental in professional nursing organisations; becoming the Federation’s Vice President a year after its inauguration. Evelyn’s impressive career and influence extended beyond the ANF. ➡️ Founder of the (Royal) Victorian Trained Nurses Association in 1901. ➡️ Director of the Victorian Trained Nurses’ Club ➡️ Trustee of the Edith Cavell Trust Fund ➡️ Extensive military career, starting as a sister of the Australian Army Nursing Service, rising to matron-in-chief. Among many other achievements, she earned her numerous honours, including the Royal Red Cross (1st Class), the OBE, the CBE, and the Florence Nightingale Medal, leaving behind her legacy as a driving force behind the nursing profession in Australia.
