Befriending makes a life changing difference, not only for our service users, but our volunteers too! This #VolunteersWeekScot, we want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who volunteers their time with us. 🙌 "People think the befriending service only benefits your service user, but it benefits you as a volunteer as well. Obviously it gave me placement hours, but it gave me the experience of understanding how lonely people can be, and I felt like I was making a real difference." "It's great knowing you were making a difference to people’s lives. The people you were matched up with, it was for a reason. They were lonely, they didn’t have much contact from other people in their lives. It makes a difference. And it was easy to get started, the training was straightforward, and the staff at No. 1 were helpful if there were any issues." Although I LOVE talking, if there's one topic I am qualified for (or so I like to believe) and get invited to speak on is volunteering ;-) One of my highlights of working with volunteers is the power of reflection - asking the right questions, creating space, and digging deeper beyond the surface - can transform a simple activity into a life-altering experience. Among other things, for volunteers, it means becoming better doers; for volunteer engagers, it means becoming a better listener. For volunteers it could result in a serious commitment to volunteering; for the engagers, it can redefine their relationship with the work and its impact. For both, it could fundamentally alter their view of the world, its challenges, and what they can DO about it. :-) Join me and other folks from the volunteering ecosystem for a webinar this week. If you're a pro at reflections, then still consider dropping by, saying hello, and telling me how my beard looks! Link to register: https://lnkd.in/dfH3_mHD

Power of Reflection ============= Years ago, at IIMA, one of our profs had an interesting way to "evaluate" us- asking us to write Reflective Notes. Essentially he didn't want to 'evaluate' but since the institute required it, he devised a way for us to reflect and hence learn more. The 3 reflective notes I wrote then played a significant role in shaping my own thought processes. For those of us who engage volunteers in our work, getting the volunteers to REFLECT on the experience (both in terms of what they FEEL, but also what they THINK) is critical to internalise learnings and behavioural change, and convert volun-tourists to sustained and committed volunteers. Dharmaraj Solanki's session will be very useful if you want to build this practice into your work of engaging volunteers. Go ahead and register- details below.
