Who? What? When? Where? Why? The five W's help children gather crucial information about a text and are a critical component of writing. This song helps students understand the importance of each W and how they improve fiction and nonfiction comprehension. This is an ideal resource for second graders who will enjoy singing along to the catchy tune and without realizing they are learning how to improve their reading and writing skills too! https://bit.ly/3y7XcLf

Everyday I’m faced with children who hate reading and writing. They groan at the idea of a writer in their school. This phenomenon can occur in as early as 6 year olds and by the time they reach 13 they often refuse to do it. Why? For me, it revolves around our enthusiasm for relentless testing. The idea of things being right and wrong sucks the play out of learning and fundamentally makes the act of reading boring. I’m fortunate. I can focus on fun. Running poetry workshops can be a laugh. In my view if they enjoy writing then the spelling and grammar and the language punctuation will follow. But what do you think? Teachers, parents? What’s your secret to improving literacy? #literacy #learning #education

Teacher: (returning paper to student) Where are all the fragments and run-ons that are usually in your writing? Teen: I did my best. Teacher: 🤨 (raised eyebrow) Teen: (walking away) What are fragments and run-ons? 🤷 A couple years later, a new teacher in high school realized we didn’t understand grammar, and she changed our world. 🤩 I can’t teach your teen everything I learned that year in 2 nights, but I can help your teen understand what it takes to write a perfect sentence and how to put those sentences into an essay next week. Get a ticket to the paid workshop for your middle schooler, high schooler, or college student when you drop the word “pencil” below. Stronger writing skills make learning easier. I can help. #momsofteens #essaywritinghelp #GrammarLessons #writingtips #writing #essaywriting #parentsoftweens #parentsofteens

Sentence-level work is the bread and butter of explicit writing instruction and development. It allows students to experiment with writing in a controlled and purposeful way, without the overwhelm of extended writing. It also drastically increases the amount students write during a lesson (a sentence here and there add up, particularly if you are working with reluctant writers!) Combining sentences allow you to model different types of sentences and experiment with different ways to revise and construct sentences. It takes minimal prep (I've had many instances of coming up with sentences for students to combine in teachable moments during class!) and the impact can be huge! (remember, you can ask students to do sentence combining activities to their own writing as part of their revision processes!) #writingmatters #literacyforall #englishteacher #sentencelevelwriting

We are concluding our summer reading tip series with a bit of writing advice. We hope you and your family had a wonderful time reading this summer and we'll see you in the schools soon! If your child is struggling to write a word: Ask your child to pound the word with their fist and then tap the sounds left to right. It sounds like this: “The word is sock - ready….pound, “sock”, /s/ /o//ck/, sock”. Ask students to write what they hear without giving them prompts or hints. Writing gives us important information about whether kids understand and apply the sounds they have been taught.

✍️"Text annotation increases levels of comprehension, criticality, and engagement," says Andrea Castellano, an elementary teacher in New York City’s public school system and the author of the Cult Of Pedagogy. The ability to process the text in this way helps students to become better readers and boosts overall grade results. We also believe that this indirectly has a positive effect on creativity and writing skills, so we encourage educators to use these practices, as they are presented in this article very constructively and clearly. ⬇️📖 https://lnkd.in/deYeUHS4 #annotation #writing #reading #tipsforteachers
