CEO, National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) | President & Founder of ProVention | Innovating Chronic Disease Prevention | Nonprofit & Public Health Leader | Advocate for Health Equity & Social Impact
October is LGBTQ+ History Month—a perfect time to bring attention to health equity and its importance. For far too long, the LGBTQ+ community has faced barriers to accessing quality healthcare, which can lead to disparities in chronic disease outcomes. As someone deeply committed to prevention and advocacy, I believe that true progress requires us to address these gaps head-on. This progress starts with creating inclusive health strategies that meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. It's also important to note that health equity is about more than access—it’s about trust, respect, and cultural competency in care. For example, it's important that we respect trans peoples' pronouns and identities when providing them with healthcare, as negative experiences with healthcare professionals can deter patients from seeking help or receiving the appropriate care. This month, let's recommit to making sure all people, regardless of identity, have access to the tools and resources they need for a healthy future. #LGBTQHistoryMonth #Healthcare #HealthEquity

New research indicates that LGBTQ+ people involved in farming are over three times more likely to experience depression and suicidal intent and about two and a half times more likely to experience anxiety compared to the general population. While studies estimate at least 23,000 LGBTQ+ people are involved in farming in the U.S., the actual number is likely higher. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988. The 988 Lifeline provides free and confidential support for people in emotional distress. In 2022, 24% of LGBTQ+ adults in America reported mistreatment or blame for their health problems from their care provider. Discrimination in healthcare only piles on to the emotional and physical stressors already felt by many in the LGBTQ+ community. That's why comprehensive health coverage with a wide range of services and access to care can provide the support your employees need. You can advance the well-being of your workplace community by offering personalized, inclusive whole-health care. Health education initiatives, an Employee Assistance Program for access to counseling and mental well-being, and established partnerships with healthcare providers are a few ways to promote the whole health of your employees.
