Well it's done! I submitted three terms to ASTM International Technical Committee D37 on Cannabis for consideration. Which terms? If you've been following me, you know I've been word-smithing these for a little bit now. Trying to figure out the perfect balance between scientific, technical accuracy, and common usage in industry. And, I finally think we are close. Each term is highly market relevant and serves to fill a gap in knowledge as well as eliminating confusion and nuance. So which terms are we talking? The first is #Solventless coined by Nick Tanem to describe the process for making hash, rosin, and other forms of solventless concentrates and extracts. The second is Total #Cannabinoids designed to give a simple definition allowing for consistent quantification of prevalent cannabinoids across jurisdictions. Finally, and maybe most controversial, is #ConsumerProduct Containing Cannabinoids intended to provide a general classification for those consumer products that contain cannabinoids to distinguish them from consumer products that do not contain cannabinoids. I hoping that these terms make their way through the balloting process and start being utilized more and more by you all in everyday situations. Have a great weekend everyone. Live long and process 🖖🏼

The 2024 Farm Bill draft has just introduced a controversial amendment proposed by Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., which could reshape the entire hemp industry. This amendment aims to redefine hemp to include only naturally occurring, nonintoxicating cannabinoids, limiting THC and THCA content to less than 0.3% on a dry-weight basis. If passed, this could shut down a significant portion of the cannabinoid hemp market, including the lucrative THCA seed market. Reactions from the industry are mixed and heated. Some see it as a necessary step for regulation, while others believe it could stifle innovation and growth. "Trust me, bro, the DEA said they don't care about intoxicating hemp derivatives." Oh yeah? Then why are they studying their cannabimimetic effects? That's right, 3 DEA agents listed as co-authors with the research contractor RTI International on this paper, which looked at cannabimimetic effects of minor cannabinoids and synthetic IHDs Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ8-THC) and (6aR,9R)-Δ10-tetrahydrocannabinol. I'm not suggesting this is a conspiracy theory. It's well known the DEA is interested in IHDs. But what could this mean for future policy from the DEA? "Delineation of their potential adverse effects, including their ability to produce Δ9-THC-like intoxication, is crucial" "Δ8-THC was the only compound that produced Δ9-THC-like psychoactive effects." And on a side note, despite prior research showing beta-caryophyllene activates CB2 (albeit in the high micromolar range), they claimed "beta-caryophyllene and beta-caryophyllene oxide exhibited negligible affinity for both CB1 and CB2 receptors" #BetterCannabisThroughScience
