What's the difference between Total Cannabinoids and Sum of Cannabinoids? 🤔 The mass proportion of acidic form #Cannabinoids to neutral form cannabinoids, of course! Well, at least that's what the volunteer members of ASTM International #D37 on #Cannabis are trying to figure out. Both terms are used to describe a total, but does that total take into account the potential to convert from acidic to neutral form, or not? Is there a need for both types of totals? Where one is the total mass of the cannabinoids present in the sample before decarboxylation, and the other is the total mass of the cannabinoids present in the sample after decarboxylation? Since markets around the US and abroad approach this question differently, harmonization of these concepts is the goal of this effort. The D37 is currently balloting both terms to provide clarity to the global marketplace and defines: Total Cannabinoids as the total taking into consideration the potential to convert from acidic form to neutral form; and Sum of Cannabinoids as the straight summation of the cannabinoids, acidic forms plus neutral forms. The D37 is also balloting the term #Solventless as an adjective so that it can be applied to both processes and products, and has defined it in a way that captures the modern utilization of the term inclusive of techniques beyond mechanical separation. Consumer Product Containing Cannabinoids is back to ballot as well. This time with more explanation and rationale for its existence, and an extensive supporting discussion point that includes recommended concentration limits for cannabinoids, like #THC, which could be used to potentially classfy a consumer product as a consumer product containing cannabinoids. And, the D37 is balloting the terms Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to harmonize these concepts as they relate to the greater Cannabis sativa L. ecosystem. The hope is that by standardizing and harmonizing these terms, the D37 can promote their utilization and incorporation into everyday language. By speaking the same technical language, we ensure we convey messaging effectively and efficiently. We also avoid conflict, but only after we come to a consensus on the words and their meaning. i’m going to preface this with saying that I have a lot of customers that I make products for that are also in the industrial Hemp space. And I fully support their endeavors. But that being said, I see the #SaveCBD all over the place right now. Are there specific laws that are exclusively targeting the molecule cannabidiol? Are we talking about full spectrum CBD? Isolate CBD? Or are we trying to lump all of the synthetic isomers under the “CBD “umbrella? And if we are, are there any peer reviewed papers that prove D8, HHC, or any other intoxicating isomer actually has therapeutic benefits? I was there in 2017 and 2018 when people were testifying on Capitol Hill regarding how CBD has therapeutically significantly changed the quality of peoples lives. During that time. Nobody was testifying in front of Congress how D8, HHC or any other isomer was the solution we were looking for. Or is this more about the massive industry that was created on a loophole that people are trying to protect? Not trying to be offensive with the term “loophole“ but I can’t think of a better term for it. If you have one, please let me know.
