Teach Your Team How Not To Do Their Job (And Why It’s Crucial) Ever train your employees on something completely outside their job description? I just did—and it’s been one of the most impactful decisions for our Q4 planning. Yesterday, while training some of my team members on Q4 offer creation, our senior strategists started asking a lot of questions about manufacturing, lead times, and negotiating with factories. Technically, these topics aren’t part of their role, but I found it essential to dive into these areas. Why? Because understanding the bigger picture equips them to make smarter, more informed decisions for both our clients and our internal brands. Sure, it’s not their job to handle factory negotiations or supply chain logistics—but when they understand these dynamics, their strategic choices become sharper, faster, and more aligned with the realities of the market. It’s not just about doing the job you’re hired for—it’s about having the knowledge to connect all the dots and drive better results. Training your team beyond their roles isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing better.

Making the leap to lean management in the warehouse or the supply chain requires the same kind of cultural shift and change in management behaviors as other operational areas. For a successful lean transformation, distribution management needs to take the lead in creating a strong sense of ownership at the operational level, and then provide people on the warehouse floor with the need for change, strategy, and support. Distribution center managers must shift their time from being problem-solvers towards becoming teachers, teaching those who are closest to the problems how to solve them. The distribution manager’s role, in turn, is to teach warehouse supervisors how to: a) use the operating system to identify problems for continuous improvement; b) employ standard problem-solving methods; c) facilitate a team through a continuous improvement project; and engage them in identifying problems. 🔗 Link in comments below to read more about lean in warehousing #Warehousing #Supplychain #Logistics #leanthinking #Distributionmanagement #Distributioncenter

Complacency will cost you efficiency.... It's time to stand back and assess your operation with a fresh eyes look... For a meaningful Rapid Plant Assessment, you have to observe the Operations (not only looking, but seeing) with the following categories to file observations: 1) Customer Satisfaction 2) Safety, Environment Cleanliness, and Order 3) Visual Management System 4) Scheduling System 5) Use of space, movement of materials, and product line flow 6) Levels of inventory and work in process 7) Teamwork and motivation 8) Condition and maintenance of equipment and tools 9) Management of complexity and variability 10) Supply chain integration 11) Commitment to quality Your scorecard will tell the story of the condition of the Operation. You'll almost certainly find gaps, redundancies, and opportunities. Do you have visual management on the shop floor? Have you implemented layered leader standard work? Does your area manager have a time, every day, they scan the visual management tools? How about your plant manager? Are you using Daily Accountability Meetings to address the issues captured in the visual management tools? Remember: these basic Lean Leadership tools will create an environment of continuous improvement. ---------- We stabilize operations that struggle to find that "operations drum beat". We increase efficiency and throughput by applying solid, foundational operations tools with knowledge in the light of experience. Reach out if you'd like a FREE discovery call to see if we might be able to help you.

✨I help finance & operational teams to accelerate new therapies to their patients by implementing digital tools to optimize supply chain processes, resources and production capabilities. GMP & Lean Six Sigma MBB. 📳
What is your role as Lean manager? I was interviewed few weeks ago by Kilian, student in supply chain management: ✨What is the most valuable thing you have ever done for a company that you are most proud of? I had to support a team with a high level of burn-out, working with high level of frustration. They were losing clients trust and at risk to have orders cancelled and non-renewal of LTA contracts. I was able to motivate a team and renew their desire to work differently by implementing standard processes. Together, we created their new vision and the road-map to improve their way of working. I have worked in collaboration with the end-clients to implement new lean process to guarantee order to be delivered on time every time.I am very happy because today LTA's are renewed, their teams are trained on Lean and are implementing Lean GB projects to improve more processes for their clients. ✨When you are hired to optimize a process, where do you start and what are the next steps you take? The first step is to understand their current way of working by mapping the process. Next, it's about identifying areas for improvement and finally defining the actions to be implemented by priority. ✨How do you improve customer friendliness and how do you achieve it, as well as the added value it brings? Building a relationship of trust is critical, and friendliness is essential for working with client teams. I pay attention to the team's habits, such as their break schedules and working hours. To create a good atmosphere, I ensure not to disrupt their routines. I also make a point of participating in their team meetings and understanding their way of working. ✨What technologies can you implement, and what are the advantages of these technologies and the value they bring? It is crucial to collect information on the processes that need improvement. Understanding the starting point by measuring process performance indicators is key. Digital tools, such as applications, are essential for collecting, visualizing, and tracking the fluctuations of process performance indicators. Thanks kilian garten for our discussion and good luck with your studies. www.castex-consulting.nl

One very cool thing about manufacturing...every organization has their own operating systems to drive excellence---their own spin on some tried-and-true systems. Many are born out of the Lean Six Sigma/Manufacturing models, the Toyota Production System (TPS), etc. I don't consider myself an expert on these--not even close. But stuff like: 5Y 8D A3 5S Kaizen Hoshin OpEx (operational excellence) And so forth. All terms you should become very familiar with if manufacturing is your desired landing zone. Yes, even in HR. Which brings me to this: our team is currently looking for a Manufacturing Continuous Improvement Leader here at Bocar US! So maybe YOU are the one to continue teaching me...AND be a part of making our operating systems among the best in class when it comes to high-pressure aluminum die-casting. This will be a very hands-on role. Leading a FOR REAL diverse team of leaders and technical subject matter experts in driving improvement across all functions at our Huntsville, Alabama location. I'm as transparent as it comes...so here it is... This isn't for someone looking to saunter through a normal 9-5 day. It isn't the hours per se---it's the work. It's foundry and formation operations. It gets hot. But if you can TAKE THE HEAT, the room to actually really make a difference is there---daily. The room to grow your career is absolutely a reality. The opportunity to deliver for our customers and our team must be your focus. Getting incrementally better over time. Link to our careers page is in the comments! If you meet most of the requirements, we want to meet YOU!
