The Gordie Howe international Bridge. 2nd tallest in North America (220 meters/ 722 feet). Connecting two counties. Finally connected, and poised to be a new icon for Windsor/ Detroit. Can it be? “The Gordie Howe International Bridge, known during development as the Detroit River International Crossing and the New International Trade Crossing, is a cable-stayed international bridge across the Detroit River, currently under construction… * A dedicated multi-use path that will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists * Six-lanes: three Canadian-bound, three US-bound * Total length: approximately 2.5 kilometres / 1.5 miles * Clear span of 853 metres / 0.53 miles - the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America * No piers in the water * One approach bridge on each side of the crossing to connect Ports of Entry in Canada and the US * Once complete, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be among the top five longest bridges in North America.” It will be interesting to see if this bridge reaches iconic status for the two cities and for the region.

How can structural engineers make a positive contribution to the inclusive design process? Andy Pottinger, group director, Kenneth Leung, associate and Nicolas Raffel Torrebiarte, structural engineer from Buro Happold’s Bridges team, along with other distinguished authors, recently published the IStructE guide ‘Inclusive Design for Structural Engineers.’  Kenneth Leung, associate, Buro Happold said “Inclusivity is embedded in bridge engineering. When designing bridges, we must not only account for technical aspects like gradients but also consider the bridge’s context. Where is it located? Who will use it? What is its function? Bridges should be more than mere connectors; they should be welcoming spaces. For example, narrow, enclosed bridges may inadvertently exclude those with claustrophobia. Additionally, dynamics matter—avoiding overly bouncy bridges allows those who experience vertigo reassurance and a sense of safety. As engineers, we must carefully consider the elements of a bridge design, as beyond connectivity, bridges play a vital role in fostering community and social inclusion.” This comprehensive resource offers guidelines for inclusive design within the built environment, drawing upon the expertise and technical know-how of the structural engineers to create welcoming, equitable spaces for everyone. Part One delves into important aspects of inclusive design, including legislation, fire protection, evacuation, accessibility, neuro-inclusion, adaptability, flexibility, design preparation, brief, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover. NYU Tandon PhD candidate Caleb Beckwith wins ASNT (The American Society for Nondestructive Testing) fellowship. His paper, "Wave Interactions of Architecture Metamaterials for Defect Detection and Mechanical Property Measurements," recently attracted the attention of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, which awarded him a fellowship and funding for his research. "I am thrilled that the ASNT has recognized the high caliber of Caleb's research and its enormous potential,” Professor Nikhil Gupta says. “His intellectual curiosity and scientific rigor make him a credit to my lab, and I'm excited about all that he will achieve in the future." In the heart of Pride Month, I find myself immersed in a sea of thoughts, pondering over the essence of pride and how my role at HDR can serve as a beacon of hope for my LGBTQ+ brethren. We are the architects of society, molding sustainable and inclusive urban landscapes that echo our commitment to social equity, diversity, and safe spaces for all. Architecture, in its truest form, is a reflection of our values, dreams, and shared identity. It’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about building bridges of acceptance and equality. The architectural landscape has evolved, embracing inclusive design as a potent weapon against oppression and a catalyst for positive change. Here’s how we, at HDR, can empower our LGBTQ+ communities in the work we do every day: 1. Sanctuaries of Inclusion: Housing is not just about four walls and a roof; it’s about creating a sanctuary where everyone feels at home. Vancouver, a city renowned for its diversity and progressive values, can pioneer in crafting such inclusive spaces. Architects can design homes that transcend functional needs and prioritize inclusivity with features like gender-neutral bathrooms, accessible entrances, and communal spaces. 2. Battling Homelessness: The homelessness crisis in Vancouver is a grim reality, with LGBTQ+ youth bearing the brunt of it. By joining forces with local organizations, architects can design shelters and transitional housing that cater to the unique challenges faced by queer individuals, ensuring safety, dignity, and self-acceptance. 3. Beyond Blueprints: The vibrant LGBTQ+ community of Vancouver is a kaleidoscope of events and advocacy efforts. Architects can actively participate by attending these events, partnering with community organizations, and weaving LGBTQ+ narratives into urban planning discussions. 4. Public Spaces of Acceptance: Public spaces, from parks to community centers, should be a haven for all. Architects can ensure privacy, safety, and visibility by designing spaces that accommodate diverse identities. Thoughtful lighting, seating arrangements, and signage can contribute to a more accepting environment.
