A royal church offering daily services for all and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over a thousand years of history.

About us

Westminster Abbey is one of the world's great churches. It has been the setting for every coronation since that of William the Conqueror in 1066 and for countless other great events in the life of the nation. Thirty kings and queens lie buried within the Abbey’s walls, and many great men and women from our history are commemorated here, from statesmen and soldiers to scientists, writers and artists. Every year more than a million visitors from around the world come to explore this wonderful 750-year-old building. Thousands more come to worship at the daily services which are at the heart of life at the Abbey. The Abbey is an exciting, fascinating place to work. Our 600 highly-committed staff and volunteers are dedicated to caring for the Abbey and for all who visit and worship here. Our community is made up of clergy, musicians, vergers, conservators, stonemasons, teachers, visitor welcome and security staff, and many more besides. The Abbey is also home to the thriving Westminster Abbey Institute which aims to renew faith in public life, and to the Abbey's Foundation which raises funds to protect the Abbey, its collections and musical heritage for today and for future generations. Yesterday we marked the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Britain at a Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication in the Abbey. The service was attended by the Prime Minister alongside serving Royal Air Force personnel, veterans and their families. Afterwards, a Lancaster bomber took part in a flypast over the Abbey The Battle of Britain - a 112-day fight for control of Britain's skies between July and October 1940 - was the first decisive battle in history fought entirely in the air, and one which proved to be a dramatic turning point in the Second World War. Our annual commemoration remembers the service and sacrifice of all of the pilots and aircrew who took part in the Battle, fighting against extraordinary odds to defend the country from invasion. Glance up as you pass through the Abbey's Great West Door and you'll see ten statues to modern martyrs - Christians who gave up their lives for their beliefs. The martyrs are drawn from every continent and many Christian denominations and represent all who have been oppressed or persecuted for their faith. Among them are victims of Nazism, communism and religious prejudice in the 20th century. They are: - St Maximilian Kolbe from Poland - Manche Masemola from South Africa - Janani Luwum from Uganda - Grand Duchess Elizabeth from Russia - Dr Martin Luther King Jr from the USA - St Oscar Romero from El Salvador - Dietrich Bonhoefferfrom Germany - Esther John from Pakistan - Lucian Tapiedi from New Guinea - Wang Zhiming from China The statues, carved from French Richemont limestone, were unveiled in 1998 at a service attended by HM Queen Elizabeth II. You can find out more about the lives and legacies of the martyrs on our website at: https://lnkd.in/dK5tk7i3

Last Thursday, the Abbey's Communications and Digital Team spent a day volunteering at leading homelessness charity The Passage . Preparing and serving food to clients, the team witnessed the range of services The Passage offers, including accommodation, housing support, healthcare, employment and chaplaincy. The Abbey, a neighbour of The Passage in the heart of Westminster, recently made a £500,000 donation to support the charity’s No Night Out initiative, which works with people at risk of spending a first night on the streets, providing them with emergency accommodation while its staff offer one-to-one support to move them into safe and sustainable housing. The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, visited earlier this year to meet staff, volunteers and service users and find out more about the project. Find out more about the Dean’s visit and the Abbey’s collaboration with The Passage: https://lnkd.in/e4P_2H6H. #volunteering #change #charity
