About us
Westminster Abbey is one of the world's great churches. It has been the setting for every coronation since that of William the Conqueror in 1066 and for countless other great events in the life of the nation. Thirty kings and queens lie buried within the Abbey’s walls, and many great men and women from our history are commemorated here, from statesmen and soldiers to scientists, writers and artists. Every year more than a million visitors from around the world come to explore this wonderful 750-year-old building. Thousands more come to worship at the daily services which are at the heart of life at the Abbey. The Abbey is an exciting, fascinating place to work. Our 600 highly-committed staff and volunteers are dedicated to caring for the Abbey and for all who visit and worship here. Our community is made up of clergy, musicians, vergers, conservators, stonemasons, teachers, visitor welcome and security staff, and many more besides. The Abbey is also home to the thriving Westminster Abbey Institute which aims to renew faith in public life, and to the Abbey's Foundation which raises funds to protect the Abbey, its collections and musical heritage for today and for future generations. Crisp autumn days in our beautiful gardens🍂 Did you know the Abbey has several of these historic gardens in its walls? The College Garden has been in cultivation for over 900 years, whereas the Little Cloister Garden, with its Victorian fountain and borders of scented plants, is more modern from the 18th century. You can visit the gardens from Monday to Friday throughout the year. #garden #landscape #environment

Over the past two weeks, our Conservation team have been conducting detailed condition checks on the Abbey’s 14th-century sedilia - a set of four canopied seats by the High Altar. The sedilia's oak panels were originally richly decorated with paintings of eight figures - four on each side - made by highly skilled craftsman. Dating from 1307, they are among the earliest surviving examples of panel paintings in the UK. Some of the figures were destroyed during the Reformation and the Civil War. Those that remain include the figures of two kings on the north side, and St John the Evangelist as a pilgrim receiving a ring from St Edward the Confessor on the south side. Our conservators have been meticulously examining the polychrome surfaces to check if any paint or gilding is lifting or flaking off. If necessary, consolidation work will be carried out by introducing an adhesive between the lifting paint layers and the wooden support using a brush. These efforts will help to ensure that one of our greatest treasures remains safeguarded for future generations. You can find out more about the sedilia and their fascinating history on our website at: https://lnkd.in/eHq6fPpr

Explore the King Charles III Sacristy - a new building being constructed here at the Abbey to transform the welcome we offer our visitors. Set on the foundations of the Abbey's former medieval Great Sacristy, the building will house state-of-the-art visitor facilities, allowing the Abbey itself to be preserved in all its beauty and wonder as a sacred space. The project will also see visitors entering the Abbey through the Great West Door - the ceremonial entrance used for royal weddings and coronations for centuries - where the full beauty and majesty of the Abbey will be revealed. Our teams will be working hard on the project over the coming months and you can follow us here for all the updates. https://lnkd.in/enKzty7B
