Every year, 300,000 children are born with a treatable disease, but because they don’t have access to basic diagnostic testing, 50%-80% of them will not receive timely preventative care.  𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 I'm talking about Sickle Cell Disease. Even though treatment is effective and inexpensive, the majority of children in Sub-Saharan Africa will not receive a diagnosis or treatment before it is too late. They will die before their 5th birthday. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Sickle Forward is a non-profit organization, that has identified a way to solve this problem. They have partnered with a US-based diagnostic company to drive down the cost of point of care testing to $2 per person. Is AI here to replace humans? Absolutely not, but things will change as we adapt to new technologies. It is likely that human factors will become a big differentiator in future roles. Think of customer support bots. Does anybody appreciate working with them? How about the automated chat GPT-written connection requests you receive on LinkedIn? You can always tell when someone is using AI because although it contains the right words, it lacks the meaning that is inherent in human connections. On March 7, at the PhD Pathways Summit, Ali Divan, Ph.D. will be talking about how to connect with people sincerely and how to leverage your own human element in your networking approach. Link to the event in the comments! #networking #biotechnology
