2024 AIA President. HOK Architect. Cornell Trustee. Detroit Daughter. Ingenuity Chicago Board Chair.
This year’s AIA International conference was held in Hong Kong. I arrived on Wednesday morning and departed yesterday afternoon to begin a brief visit to Singapore. Over the past few days, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and reconnect with so many wonderful AIA members. I was especially excited to see several of my classmates from Cornell and celebrate HOK’s 40th Anniversary in Hong Kong. Huge congratulations to the AIA International President, Yew Kee Cheong and the AIA Hong Kong President, Johnny Fu on an amazing conference. Many thanks to your respective teams for putting all of this together for us to enjoy. The tours and seminars were spectacular. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to connect with our rapidly expanding global AIA membership. Special thanks to AIA Board Member Winston Yeo for making sure that I got to see so much of Hong Kong in a relatively short period of time. I only wish that I could have physically been in Baltimore, MD at the exact same time to participate in the NOMA conference. I was able to participate virtually, but it’s just not the same. I missed my NOMA family dearly, but will look forward to next year’s conference in Kansas City. For now, I will spend some time in Singapore with AIA members, peer organizations and students before heading home at the end of the week. #MoreIn24Monday #KND4AIA #100Week46

Yesterday I had the privilege of joining my fellow CEOs from the AEC industry on the panel, Looking Forward: Building Industry Leaders Share Their Insights on the Next 30 Years. It was a good conversation that also recognized the need for us to take actionable steps to move the needle. Ultimately, we came together to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of International Code Council and the career of Dominic Sims as he prepares to retire in December and the amazing impact he made in this industry. I have worked with Dom for over a decade and have truly appreciated his depth of knowledge, honesty and support. Congratulations! One key takeaway from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) members who I had the pleasure of speaking with is that we need more education about building codes in architecture school. Michael Armstrong and I heard that message loud and clear and will bring that to our alliance partners. Lastly, it was great to reconnect with James Tobin, CAE, Henry Chamberlain, George Guszcza, D.Eng, CPEM, CCM and the National Institute of Building Sciences staff.

One of my favorite meetings each year is the Large Firm Roundtable. It is humbling to be invited on behalf of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) to listen, learn and speak with the CEOs of the largest architecture firms in the world. This fall the meeting started with the Dean’s Forum, where I was able to speak on a panel discussing additional pathways and listen to some rockstar students share their thoughts and expectations in architecture school and practice. I also had the opportunity to share the stage with 2024 AIA President Kimberly Dowdell to share an update on changes in AIA programs and services that was developed based on their feedback from my first year as CEO. Thank you Griff Davenport, FAIA and Wendy Sullock Rogers, FAIA for the invitation to participate once again. Thanks to everyone at this meeting for your honest feedback and positive support. It is always great to see 2022 AIA President Dan Hart, FAIA, PE and we also appreciate the work you continue to do on behalf of AIA. Each year I am lucky enough to be given what he calls a “doodle” from Tim Cahill at HNTB which I call art. This one is getting framed. I also had to make a quick visit to Pascale Sablan FAIA,NOMA,LEED AP office, loved the vision wall! Of course I must give a shout out to AIA staff lead Rachel R Gresham, AIA, MBA, WELL AP, CDT who does a great job keeping this group organized and moving in the right direction. Bravo!
