Fallout Tactics
Fallout Tactics is (also known as Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel) is a real-time tactics role-playing game (RTT-RPG) based on the post-apocalyptic Fallout universe. It is a PC-exclusive title, developed by Micro Forté and published by 14 Degrees East in 2001. The game includes more than 150 weapons, including various melee, real-life and fictional weapons. Since the acquisition of the Fallout franchise by Bethesda, the game has been deemed "broad strokes" canon, where the general events happened but not necessarily with all details as portrayed.
The following weapons appear in the video game Fallout Tactics:
Overview
Almost every weapon in the game can fire in burst mode. This means that the character fires in short bursts, and not that the actual weapon is capable of firing in burst mode! (The most common burst mode is the 3-round burst, but some weapons can fire in 5- or 8-round burst.)
Fully automatic fire mode is not available.
Each item (weapon, ammunition, consumable, etc.) has a certain weight.
There is a large range of ammunition types available for the weapons: For example the Beretta 92FS can fire 9mm Ball, 9mm JHP and 9mm AP bullets. There are also fictional ammunition types, like the EMP Shells for the shotguns.
Handguns
Beretta 92FS
The Beretta 92FS makes an appearance in this game. It is the starting weapon of Farsight and Stitch. It has a 15-round magazine and can fire all 3 types of 9mm ammo. Appears as "M92FS" in the game.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: One of the more common 9mm pistols, the Beretta is popular due to its reliability, 15 round magazine and good looks.
Browning Hi-Power
The Browning Hi-Power appears in Fallout Tactics under its actual name. It deals slightly more damage than Beretta but bizarrely weights 6 pounds unloaded (almost triple its actual weight).
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Browning High Power Pistol. Originally made in Belgium, construction of North American models had a renaissance in the early 2010s.
"Casull Revolver"
A revolver of unknown make appears in the game as a usable small gun. Although it is called "Casull Revolver", it fires .45 rounds instead of the .454 Casull. Holds 6 rounds and can only be fired one shot at a time. Judging by this, it appears to be some form of Single Action Army-type revolver.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A Casull Revolver. The origins of the Casull are lost to the mists of time.
Colt M1911A1
The M1911A1 is more powerful than the 92FS or the Browning Hi-Power, but the ".45 Caliber" round is not so common as the "9mm". It erroneously holds 12 rounds.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The classic Colt M1911 A1. Easy to use, accurate and with tremendous stopping power, this weapon will not let you down.
"Grenade Pistol"
The "Grenade Pistol" is a heavily modified flare gun that fires 40mm grenades. Very effective against groups of enemies. Despite being stated as a modified flare gun, the inventory model's grip, hammer and the rear part of the frame appear to have been taken from a Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver.
IMI/Magnum Research Desert Eagle Mark XIX
Perhaps the first game (and still one of very few) where the Mark XIX appears as "Desert Eagle Mark XIX" and not just simply as "Desert Eagle". The most powerful non-fictional sidearm in the game. Although it fires .44 Magnum rounds, the in-game weapon features a non-fluted barrel like the .50 AE variant. Due to its massive power, characters cannot be ordered to fire this weapon in short bursts.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: An ancient Desert Eagle pistol, in .44 magnum. Interest in late 20th century films made this one of the most popular handguns of all times.
Mauser C96/M712
The Mauser C96 appears in the game as "HSI Mauser" (what seems to be a reference to the Mauser HSc, which is a completely different handgun). Holds 7 rounds, and the characters cannot be ordered to fire it in short bursts. It's a rare weapon in the game. While its characteristics and description explicitly refer to the C96 "Red 9", the gun is depicted in the game as Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A Mauser M/96 in 9x19mm Parabellum. In excellent condition. Extremely accurate.
SIG-Sauer P226
Although named the "P220 Sig Sauer", it is actually based on the SIG-Sauer P226. In line with its incorrect name, it holds 9 rounds of 9mm in the magazine.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: P220 Sig Sauer. A Swiss designed pistol, the Sig Sauer benefits from compact and lightweight construction.
Smith & Wesson Model 29
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 appears in Fallout Tactics under its own name. The characters cannot be ordered to fire it in short bursts.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Smith & Wesson M29 .44 Magnum Revolver. The most powerful revolver of its time, with a muzzle energy 30% greater than its contemporaries.
Zip Gun
The Zip Gun is a single-shot pistol firing 9mm ammunition. It is very cheap, but also pointless to carry it around. (In real world, "Zip gun" is a generic term for improvised firearms, put together from available materials and made to fire (usually small-caliber) scavenged ammo.)
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A handmade single shot pistol.
Carbine
Calico Carbine
A carbine variant of the Calico M950 appears as the "9mm Calico M-950" which is the name for the real-life pistol version. However, the in-game model has a number of differences which include a longer handguard and barrel (the latter shorter than that on actual carbine models), retracting stock, and no compensator. In-game, the Calico holds 50 rounds (despite being modelled with a 100-round magazine) and functions as a pistol that the player can attack either with triple consecutive or single shots.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A 9mm Calico M-950. This odd-looking pistol uses a helical feed system that lets it carry startling amounts of ammunition.
Submachine Guns
Heckler & Koch MP5SD1
The Heckler & Koch MP5SD1 appears as "MP5 H&K" and with a chopped barrel in Fallout: Tactics. It is the starting "automatic" weapon in the game. Holds 30 rounds. Firing it in bursts is very effective, because the characters always fire 6 bullets after every mouse click.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: MP5 H&K. Probably the most widely used and trusted sub-machinegun of the late 20th century.
MP38
The MP38 is another usable submachine gun in the game. The in-game description is incorrect, because Hugo Schmeisser had nothing to do with the MP38's development.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Schmeisser MP-38 9mm Machine pistol was introduced as the standard sub machine gun of the German Army in 1938. Cheap and reliable.
Sa vz. 61 Skorpion
The Sa vz. 61 Skorpion machine pistol appears as "Scorpio" and erroneously holds 32 rounds of 9mm ammo. It is used by many Raiders in the first part of the game.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The VZ61 Scorpio machine pistol. Used by members of the Spetsnaz.
Sten Mk II
Although the Sten Mk II has less range compared to other common submachine guns, it makes up for this deficiency with its slightly higher damage. It is a very rare weapon in the game.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The 9mm Sten Gun was developed by the British during WW2 as a cheap alternative to the more expensive Thompson SMG offered the the U.S. The Sten proved to be extremely reliable and, due to its fairly loose tolerances, could perform in poor conditions.
Calico Liberty 100
The Calico Liberty 100 is a usable 9mm submachine gun in the game. Although the "Liberty 100" in the weapon's name means that it holds 100 rounds, in-game appears with a 50-round capacity.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Calico Liberty 100. An extended variation of the Calico line, the Liberty is fully automatic. It carries a ludicrous amount of ammunition.
M1A1 Thompson
Called by its nickname "Tommy Gun", the Thompson appears once again. Fires ".45 Caliber" rounds from a 50-round drum. The burst mode means 10 rounds per click for this weapon. Despite its description, it is in fact the M1A1 model, loaded with drum magazine (while the real M1A1 wasn't designed to accept it), while the handguard is replaced with the foregrip normally found on the 1921/1928 Thompson.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: This Thompson M1928 submachine gun is a sinister looking weapon; every time you hold it, you have an urge to put on a fedora hat and crack your knuckles. The Thompson is well-fed by a large 50 round drum magazine.
IMI Uzi
The Uzi appears with a 25-round magazine in the game. Using the burst mode sends 5 rounds at the target.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: UZI 9mm. A classic amongst drug runners and elderly folk during the early stages of the 21st century, the UZI is cheap, light and jams only occasionally.
FN P90
The FN P90 this time appears correctly as FN P90c and not as H&K P90c like in Fallout 2. It has a 50-round magazine but incorrectly fires 9x19mm bullets.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Fabrique Nationale P90c was just coming into use at the time of the war. The weapon's bullpup layout, and compact design, make it easy to control. The durable P90c is prized for its reliability, and high firepower in a ruggedly-compact package.
Walther MPL
The Walther MPL holds 32 rounds and is one of the best SMG's in the game. Appears without the wire stock.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Walther MPL. A popular choice for border guards and other policing outfits. Collapsible stock optional.
Shotguns
Beretta 470 Silver Hawk
The Beretta 470 Silver Hawk is a powerful double-barreled hunting shotgun. Its only drawback is the 2-shell capacity. It is possible to shoot both barrels at the same time.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A good looking Italian double barrel weapon. A low rate of fire, but potentially devastating if both barrels are fired together.
Heckler & Koch CAWS
The Heckler & Koch CAWS holds 10 shells and appears as "HK CAWS" in the game.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The CAWS, short for Close Assault Weapons System, shotgun is a useful tool for close-range combat. The bullpup layout gives the weapon a short, easily handleable length while still retaining enough barrel length for its high velocity shells.
NeoStead 2000
The NeoStead 2000 combat shotgun is available in the game and is incorrectly shown as semi-automatic, while the real weapon is pump-action. It is called "Neostead Combat SG" and has a 12-round magazine.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: An automatic, 12 gauge military shotgun. The best weapon for close quarters, except for a flamethrower.
Pancor Jackhammer
The Pancor Jackhammer combat shotgun reappears in Fallout Tactics. It holds 10 shells. The characters can be ordered to fire a single shell, or five shells at a time. It is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, however "targeted shots" are not possible with it.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Jackhammer, despite its name, is an easy to control shotgun even when fired on full automatic. The popular bullpup design, which places the magazine behind the trigger, makes the weapon well balanced and easy to control.
Ithaca 37
The "Pump-action shotgun" in the game bears some resemblances to the hunting version of the Ithaca 37 shotgun. It carries five shells of 12 gauge.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Found everywhere, the 12 gauge pump is a popular means of self-defense due to its wide area of effect and large ammunition capacity.
Assault Rifles & Battle Rifles
AK-74
The AK-74 is the most common rifle in the game. It is carried by Raiders, Beastlords and other low-lever NPC's.
However, the design of the rifle holds numerous deviations from the "standard" Izhmash AK-47 type rifle. First of all - the model of the rifle used in-game is more reminiscent of an AK-74 rifle with its muzzle brake device removed (evident by more straight magazine, as well as a 90-degree gas block and additional hollows on the buttstock). Secondly - as per in-game stats it holds only 24 rounds in a magazine and is depicted as firing 7.62x51mm NATO rounds instead of the 7.62x39mm, used by Russian genuine AKs and AKMs.
This could be the tell-tale sign that the AK-47s in-game are in reality post-War produced copies, made by many small workshops and thus possessing numerous variations in design (it is further evident by the gun's very heavy proliferation in Chicago Wasteland). Real-world analogue would be the Khyber-pass copy AKs, found throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan. This would also explain the chambering of the rifle for 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges - since they could be easily recovered from virtually any surviving pre-War ammo stock. (However, using full-powered rifle cartridges could also bring more heavy recoil and thus problems with firing the gun accurately on full-auto)
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The AK-47 and its derivatives formed the mainstay of the Soviet Armies. Its reliability, ruggedness and accuracy have earned it the reputation of being the best assault rifle ever made.
FN FAL "G Series"
The FN FAL "G Series" is another returning weapon to the Fallout universe.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: This rifle has been more widely used by armed forces than any other rifle in history. It's a reliable assault weapon for any terrain or tactical situation.
Steyr AUG A1
Called Steyr in the game. The AUG incorrectly has a 40-round magazine and is a very accurate weapon. Despite the Swarovski telescopic sight it has the same range as the AK-47. Also, it is fired from the hip, using the same animation as all in-game submachine guns. Its drawback is that it correctly fires "5.56mm" rounds, which are not so common in the game. The AUG is mainly used by Reavers.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Army Universal Gun Steyr. Invented in Austria, the Steyr's unique design and visual look was the perfect compliment to any war-time ensemble.
M14
Although the in-game description correctly states that it fires 7.62x51mm rounds, the M14 in the game fires .303 British rounds (as the rifle's description states it is chambered for 7,62mm NATO, prompting it could be a last-minute changeover by game's developers most likely for balance reasons). The M14 holds 20 rounds per magazine and the characters can be ordered to fire single shots or 8-round bursts.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The M-14 succeeded the M1 Garand as the standard US Army Rifle. It chambered the NATO standard 7.62mm round and like its predecessor, was noted for its reliability and ease of operation.
Colt M16A1
The M16A1 (with A2 handguards) is another "5.56mm" assault rifle in the game. It erroneously holds only 24 rounds, and characters can be ordered to fire single shots, or 8-round bursts.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The M16A1 was the chief rifle used by the US marines during the start of the 21st century, and was later to be replaced by the M4 carbine. Composed of durable aluminum alloy and hearty plastic.
Ruger AC556F
The Ruger AC556F holds only 20 rounds in the game despite being modeled with a 30-round box magazine. The inventory model shows some sort of reflex scope mounted on it.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Ruger AC556F is a development of the Ruger Mini 14, a 5.56 mm assault rifle originally used only by police forces, but also popular on the open market. A large magazine and full auto fire makes this weapon a real crowd pleaser.
Enfield XL70E3
In the Fallout Universe the Enfield XL70E3 is an advanced assault rifle developed in the 22nd century. In our reality, the XL70E3 was a prototype of the L85/L86 family of weapons. Despite these facts this weapon holds only 20 rounds of 5.56mm and it performs no better than the M16A1 or the Kalashnikov.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: This was an experimental weapon at the time of the war. Manufactured, primarily, from high-strength polymers, the weapon is almost indestructible. It's light, fast firing, accurate, and can be broken down without the use of any tools.
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is another WW2-issue weapon that makes its appearance in this retro-future video game. It correctly holds 8 rounds of .30-06 ammo (although that appears as ".30.06" in the game). Strangely it cannot be fired in quick bursts, as most of the self-loading pistols could be.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The M1 Garand was the first semi-automatic rifle to be used as the standard infantry weapon of a major army when it was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1936. Its rugged construction and reliability make this weapon a popular and valuable addition to anyone's arsenal. It is scopeless, but still a nice gun.
Sniper Rifles
Heckler & Koch MSG90
The Heckler & Koch MSG90 appears as "DKS-501 Sniper Rifle" in the game. Strangely, it is given this "DKS-501" designation although that is the name of a different rifle of fictional design from the previous 2 Fallout games. Despite the magazine featured on the model, the in-game MSG90 only holds 6 rounds. It still has an extreme range and devastating power.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A DKS-501 Sniper Rifle. Excellent long range projectile weapon. Originally .308, this one is chambered in the more common 7.62 caliber.
"Colt Rangemaster"
The "Colt Rangemaster" is a fictional hunting rifle with a 10-round capacity. It can be used to pick enemies from a distance in the first parts of the game 'till the player discovers the MSG90. This weapon can also be found in Fallout.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A Colt Rangemaster semi-automatic rifle, chambered for 7.62. Single-shot only.
Machine Guns
Bren Gun
The Bren gun is one of the usable light machine guns in the game. Holds 30 rounds and fires .303 Caliber rounds. It can be fired in 10-round burst only.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: This British adaptation of a Czech design was adopted as the standard light machine gun of British and Commonwealth forces in 1938. The .303 Cal Bren was among the most liked and respected weapons available to the British in WW2, due to its exceptional ruggedness, accuracy and simplicity, and remained in service with British forces for almost 50 years.
Browning M2HB
Man-portable Browning M2 heavy machine guns can be found in the game. These devastating weapons hold only 90 rounds and are always fired in 15-round burst by the characters. Combining this weapon with the .50 Depleted Uranium ammunition can decide any battle in the wasteland.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A heavy machine gun developed in 1918 and still in use right up until the outbreak of war.
It can also be seen mounted onto of the Sherman tank that the player can use but only the main gun of the Tank is usable.
M60 GPMG
The classic M60 GPMG makes its appearance in Fallout Tactics. It incorrectly has a 50-round capacity and can be fired in 10-round bursts only.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The 7.62mm M-60 saw widespread use with U.S. and allied forces during the latter half of the 20th Century as a light machine gun. It could also be mounted on vehicles.
FN M249-E2 SAW
The FN M249-E2 SAW incorrectly fires 7.62mm rounds in the game. It is fed from 30-round STANAG magazines instead of the ammo belt and can be fired in 10-round bursts only. The most common LMG in the game, used mainly by Super Mutants.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Belgian made M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) was adopted widely in the late 20th Century as a squad level machine gun, vastly increasing the firepower available to individual squads.
Lewis Gun
The Lewis Gun appears only in the multiplayer part of the game. Called "Lewis MKII" and fires in 10-round burst.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Invented by an American, the .303 Cal Lewis Gun was adopted by the British Army during WW 1 and remained in service with allied forces until well into the 1940's. An efficient and reliable weapon.
BAR M1918A2
The Browning Automatic Rifle holds 20 rounds and is a relatively weak weapon in the game.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: The Browning Auto Rifle is used as a support weapon and for pinning enemy soldiers with the high powered 30.06 rifle rounds. Developed in the early 20th century.
Chauchat
The Chauchat appears as a hidden easter egg in the game. This LMG is known to be one of the most ineffective machine guns ever produced. In-game it has a 0 (zero) round capacity and cannot be fired. It costs only 1 dollar to purchase and is effectively a joke weapon.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: Renowned as the worst machine gun ever issued to any army at any time in history. Unreliable and poorly constructed, it was considered unusual if the gun fired more than one burst before jamming. It makes a completely useless addition to any arsenal.
Launchers
RPG-7V
The RPG-7 appears as Rocket Launcher in the game and be used to fire "Explosive Rockets", "AP Rockets", "Electrical Rockets" or "Sabot Rockets". The wooden parts have been replaced with steel to increase the durability.
The description of the weapon in the inventory: A Rockwell BigBazooka rocket launcher, with the deluxe 3 lb. trigger.
M79 Grenade Launcher
The M79 grenade launcher appears in the game but strangely its effectiveness is determined by the "Small Arms" skill. This means that the M79 grenade launcher can be used by those characters who are not very skilled with "Big Guns".
The description of the weapon in the inventory: M79 Grenade Launcher. A single shot grenade launcher.
Grenades & Mines
Mk 2 "Pineapple"
The Mk 2 hand grenade is the standard frag grenade in the game. With a high "Throwing" skill these grenades deal decent damage against unarmored enemies, like Humans, Ghouls or Beastlords.
The Mk 2 hand grenade also appears as part of the "Explosive Trap" which can be used to booby-trap doors or corpses.
M67 "Baseball"
All M67 hand grenades are modified and used as "Incendiary grenades" in the game. It is possible that they filled empty M67 bodies with napalm and used these as improvised incendiaries. This weapon also deals "Flame" not "Explosive" damage, which is more effective against unarmored targets.
M18A1 "Claymore"
M18A1 Claymores can be used to set traps. These mines deal massive damage to humanoids but are useless against robots.
The description of the weapon equipment in the inventory: A small charge designed to wound the target and alert the trapper.
