born a crime is a funny, heart-felt, sweet yet often times heartbreaking and thought-provoking memoir and ode to noah's childhood and heritage from the point of view of a little boy, teenager and a grown-up man, covering topics like race, apartheid, privilege, poverty, culture, family, self-discovery and much more
i loved how he gave nuanced historical context to his experiences and how he emphasized his grown-up realizations about certain topics and past experiences, how they sometimes opposed to how he felt or reacted at the time in his youth
also, the audiobook was wonderfully narrated as expected :-)...more

truth be told, i gave up on this book so many times. i picked it up at least 2-3 times and never got beyond the first chapter. i thought to myself: "itruth be told, i gave up on this book so many times. i picked it up at least 2-3 times and never got beyond the first chapter. i thought to myself: "is this show runner whom i admire so much actually not that good of a writer?" the sentences were disjointed and there was so much.. anxious energy? i thought about donating the book, but for some reason couldn't bring myself to do it.
i finally went ahead and got the audiobook as well and it was one of the best audiobook choices i could have made tbh. i feel like i now *understand* shonda. i understand now what she was saying and HOW she was saying it. i understand only because her story is told by her voice in her own intonation and pace, something that another narrator would not have been able to deliver.
we raked a whole garden this weekend while i was listening to it lol and i found myself nodding along, sometimes disagreeing, but at the same time also appreciating a different perspective. the speeches which were added as recorded "attachments" so to speak, made the whole thing even better.
the year of yes shows you that life not a fairy tale for most people, even for the ones who seem to have it all on the outside. everyone is battling something. but it can be a fairy tale for many of us or at least as close as it gets, if we decide so by changing our perspective and step by step moving towards our truest selves.
now im off to go look at the photos in the physical copy which i thankfully did not donate (just yet) :-)...more
