I had a mixed feeling when I was at about 75% of the book. I was planning to give it 3/5 at that point. But one should not judge too early. “Three women lived in a village. The first was mean, the second a liar and the third an egotist,” - is how the book begins and that sentence captivated my interest. The story begins with the murder of a successful ophthalmologist in the village of Giverny - the home town of the Impressionist Claude Monet. Though not a character in the story we come to know his life through various conversations between the characters. And like an impressionist painting, the story too has to be looked at as if it was one. The more you can understand this, the more you will enjoy. And as you approach the end, you will have the satisfaction of a masterpiece or a disappointment in case you don't get the gist of what impressionism is! The whole book to me felt like a work of art. The reason I felt what I said in the beginning was that it appeared to be stretched in that part of the book and kind of repetitive. And I even felt that the author was suddenly digressing! But on that count, I was wrong. Liked the characters of the two police detectives - Serenac(who is intuitive, clever and specializes in art) and Benavides(who is much more organized and methodical in his approach). But are they on the right path? The story has many facets which one would view from different points.... As I said, a painting.....more
