“Let them not be denied a few crumbs of attention or merely a 'twinkle of happiness' if, through the insidious intrusion of reality, the unattended cannot receive a 'lease of happiness.' ("Homeless, down in the corner" )”

“In a world where poverty is a crime and where people are yearning for some crumbs of affection, they can only dance on the brim of the volcano and wait for an eruption of compassion. ("New life in Schengen")”

“Those were the people who made her something, and without them she was different. She'd held on to them and to that old self tenaciously, though. She clung to it, celebrated it, worshipped it even, instead of constructing a new grown-up life for herself. For years she'd been eating the cold crumbs left over from a great feast, living on them as though they could last her forever.”

“When I was sharing crumbs, the birds flew in flocks- When I needed crumbs -they all flew south”

“The air was so thick with crumbs that it was like a scene from the horror film that cakes would make if they had video cameras and thumbs.”

“It was quite a cake. Three layers of cake interspersed with layers of jam and frosting- no, not frosting, lemon cheesecake, according to the caption- and topped with pickled strawberry icing and a ring of what looked like crumbled cookies.
"It's- it's Christina Tosi, isn't it?" she asked shyly. "The exposed sides of the cake. That's her thing. And the milk crumbs on top. I recognize them, from the Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook."
Henry looked closer- she was right. They weren't cookies.
"Milk crumbs?" he asked, trying to imagine what a milk crumb could be.
"They're made with milk powder and white chocolate. Really good. You're not supposed to eat them on their own, I don't think, they mostly go in or on other things, but they're so good I always save a few to snack on. What flavor's the cake?"
"Strawberry lemon.”

“The field mice spent their days scampering through the tall grasses and collecting fairyberries and beanstalk seeds. The stable mice helped themselves to oats and barley from the horse stalls, and built nests of straw from the Pegasus pen. The barn mice sat on the rafters, playing their fiddles and enjoying the grains they'd snatched from the golden goose's coop. The pantry mice were the happiest of all because they spent their days sleeping and their nights gorging on a plentiful supply of delicacies. They were the plumpest of mice, roll-poly critters who slumbered in the pantry during the day, then awoke after the kitchen had closed. A lazy waddle beneath the Castleteria tables would yield a cornucopia of delights- thronecake crumbs, hot cross bun bits, and pieces of pickled-plum tart.”

“Tea & Toast by Stewart Stafford
Let me stop in this lay-by a moment,
That I have tagged - Tea & Toast,
A shimmering oasis frequented often,
A soothing elixir one loves the most.
It's as comforting as a warm bath,
Enjoyed even when wracked with pain,
As welcome as an old friend's smile,
On thundery days of lashing rain.
No matter if the tea is too sweet or burns,
Greasy butter hijacked by sandpaper crumbs,
There shall be no Boston Tea Party here,
Our minuscule parole from routine doldrums.
