The Duke of Sussex is said to be planning an extended 'olive branch trip' to the UK, to win back his family. However, his wife Meghan is expected to stay in US

A royal insider has revealed why Meghan Markle is unlikely to join Prince Harry if he returns to the UK for an extended trip that he reportedly believes will be a vital part of his bid to win back his family.

The Duke of Sussex is said to be resigned to the fact he needs to spend more time in Britain if he is to repair relations with his father, King Charles - and his brother, Prince William. It's believed that the Duke has been blindsided by the double cancer diagnoses of his father and sister-in-law Princess Kate.

Consequently, he reportedly wants to "'prioritise mending his broken relationship with his family". And the 39-year-old is said to accept that this will mean he has to spend an extended period of time on this side of the Atlantic this summer.

However, it is thought that wife Meghan, 42, is unlikely to be joining him on what has been dubbed an "Olive branch trip". And that, says one insider, is because the Duchess has got "way too much on her plate" - and is scared she'll be heckled by the British Public.

A source told Closer magazine:  "Harry is going to have to return to the UK solo as it makes sense for him to take a longer trip. He’s convinced that if he spends a longer period of time there, he’ll have a better chance of reconnecting with his family.

“There’s talk of a month or so apart, which is going to be very difficult for them both as a couple. It might make for a pretty lonely summer."

The source said that Harry "is very anxious to go home and see his dad" and is keen to "catch up with his friends for his birthday in September" - and also wants to visit to his aunt, Princess Anne.

However, Meghan is said to be less keen. The source said: "She’s respectful that Harry has to go back to his homeland for practical and emotional reasons, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to go with him.

"She’s got way too much on her plate with the brand and her new cooking show, as well as looking after the children. The last thing she needs is the stress of going back to the UK, where she fears she’d be heckled again in public, which she finds really painful.”

The source went on to claim that Meghan "doesn’t have it in her to spend time with people she knows there’s tension with".

"It’s just not going to happen," said the source. “It will be hard on Meghan, but there’s just no way she can face going with him."

Meghan staying stateside will also be hard on Harry - who is said to really want Meghan and their children, Archie and Lilibet, to join him in the UK. However, the source added: "He’s very aware of how stressful it is for her and doesn’t want to force her into an uncomfortable position.”
