Prince William will be the one to roll out the welcome mat at the upcoming Japanese State Visit, going to meet Emperor Narihito and Empress Masako at their hotel, on behalf of the king.

The plan is for William to meet their Imperial Highnesses and escort them to the Horse Guards Parade in London, for the ceremonial welcome.

This will be the first time William has stepped in for Charles during a State Visit, but it’s not shocking news, Charles did the same for his mother, the late Queen, says one royal expert.

Brittani Barger, co-founder of Royal News, said: “I think it’s an honour for the monarch to entrust their heir to do such an important job.”

She added: ”And it’s good preparation for when William will one day be king.”

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will be in the UK for three days, with the visit starting on June 25, hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla. In addition to William, it's being said, Prince Edward and Sophie will take part in the engagements.

Ms Barger said of what to expect: “The state visit will serve as a way to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the UK.”

She added: “This visit has been in the works for a long time so I think everyone will be excited that it is finally getting to take place.”

Queen Elizabeth II hosted two Japanese State Visits during her reign — in 1971 and 1998 — with Emperor Naruhito's visit being the third.

“Emperor Naruhito studied in the UK so it will be a nice welcome back for him. The Japanese Imperial Family has several members who have studied for a time in the UK so they are familiar with the country.”
