The Department of Performing Arts (CAC), created in 1970 and consolidated in 1986, develops teaching activities (in undergraduate and graduate courses), research, culture and extension, and today it is configured as a national and international pole of investigation of the performing and performing arts.
At graduation, it offers bachelor and licenciate degrees. which can be taken consecutively from a unified entrance exam. In the bachelor degree in Performing Arts, the student will be able to carry out his / her course conclusion paper, among other specialties, in Acting, Direction, Scenography and Theory. In the graduation in Performing Arts, the conclusion of the course work can focus both on teaching practices and on the field of cultural action. The semester curriculum, suggested in the current pedagogical project, proposes the greatest possible integration of the subjects in the first four semesters of these two modalities of degree studies in Performing Arts. This initial period constitutes a common training platform for the two courses. From the fifth semester onwards, students opt for a bachelor or a licenciate degree, and at the end of each of these courses, they can complement their training in both qualifications.
Installed in the building of the Department of Performing Arts and cotaining the Laboratory Theater - contiguous didactic and artistic experimentation space - the graduation courses offer apparatus and technical resources that allow their development in both theoretical and practical dimensions. Teachers seeks to encourage students to develop their artistic autonomy, but always based on solid concepts. The professional trained there, whether aiming to act as a researcher, as an artist or as a teacher, is oriented to be the subject of a singular artistic discourse that promotes reflection and debate and generates a meaningful art to the Brazilian artistic and cultural panorama. Admission to graduation follows the procedures adopted by FUVEST, in two phases, with the specific stage taking place in the Department itself.
The Postgraduate Program in Performing Arts, in turn, is among the best evaluated nationally by Capes. It has an area of concentration in Performing Arts and five lines of research: History and Theory of Performing Arts in Brazil; Practices, Processes and Means in the Performing Arts; Theatricalities and Performativities: Creation, Thought and Routes; Corporealities, Memories and Contemporary Scenic Representations and Performing Arts and Education.
The teaching staff registered in the program is made up of researchers, artists and theorists working on the Brazilian scene, as well as internationally recognized visiting professors. The admission is made through a specific test, defined in notices published once a year.
Partnerships with other national and international institutions are encouraged, both in undergraduate and graduate courses, for the benefit of academic and institutional life. Currently, CAC has seven centers and research laboratories that are dedicated both to the memory of Brazilian theater and to examining the different perspectives of dance, theater and performance.
The reciprocity between teaching, research, culture and extension is systematically promoted, through samples of students 'and teachers' work presented to the public. Seminars and congresses are also promoted, which allow the production of new perceptions of the Performing Arts and connect the work of students and professors, undergraduate and graduate students, with scholars in the field in Brazil and worldwide.

Since its founding in 1971, the Department of Plastic Arts (CAP) has guided its performance in experimental ways generated by artistic practice, by its theoretical inquiries and its history. This positioning adds dimensions demanded by contemporaneity to the traditional disciplinary field, aimed at researching the potentialities of languages and the critical expansion of their investigative, constructive and expressive means.
The Department aims to provide solid practical and theoretical training in the visual arts, enabling students to work in various academic and professional areas, such as artists, visual creators, art teachers in elementary and high school, historians, critics, curators and professionals specialized in institutions of art and culture. It offers a bachelor degree and a licenciate degree in Visual Arts, which seek a balance between theoretical content and the practices of its workshops, encouraging students to consolidate their knowledge through study and research. There is also the possibility of double titling.
Graduation has a minimum duration of four years (eight semesters) and, in the case of double degrees, six years. Its subjects are taught both in the morning and in the afternoon. The first four semesters comprise the basic cycle, in which the student necessarily needs to fulfill 50% of the mandatory subjects with approval to enter the bachelor or licenciate degree; in order to opt for the double degree, the percentage of approval is 75%. From that moment, you can choose the design of the curriculum that best suits your purposes. At the end of graduation, you must present a course conclusion paper and submit to a public evaluation board. To obtain the double degree, the student must present two conclusion papers, one for a bachelor degree and the other for a licenciate degree. The graduate student in Visual Arts has the possibility to apply for several types of scholarships to encourage research at the level of scientific initiation and to undertake internships at the University or at other academic and cultural institutions. It also has the opportunity to exchange at renowned universities abroad.
After graduating, you have the option to continue your academic career by joining the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts (PPGAV) at ECA. The PPGAV focuses on two major areas of concentration: 1) Visual Poetics, which is aimed at artist-researchers and is divided into two lines of research, namely, Creation Processes in Visual Arts and Multimedia; and that of 2) Theory, Teaching and Learning of Art, which is also divided into two lines of research, aimed, respectively, at researchers in the field of Theory, History and Criticism of Art and at researchers interested in the Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning of Art. Art. Since 2002, the program has edited the magazine Ars, which brings together contributions from artists, educators, critics and authors active in the debate of art and culture in general.

Since the founding of ECA more than 50 years ago, the Department of Communications and Arts (CCA) has been responsible for graduation courses at the interface between the Humanities and Communication, in dialogue with the Arts, which are offered to various courses at USP.
In 2011, it started the Licentiate Degree in Educommunication, which prepares professionals capable of carrying out research and consultancy activities for projects at the interface between Communication and Education, including the management and coordination of distance education projects. In teaching, graduates will be able to work in the school environment, especially taking on projects and disciplines that incorporate media, meeting the emerging demand for professionals with the necessary qualifications to work in the context of new information and communication technologies. In consulting, they will be able to provide services in the space of different media and communication platforms, as well as in projects maintained by organizations and companies and aimed at the management of communication in educational spaces, formal or non-formal. Educommunication professionals will also be able to carry out research activities at the interface between Communication and Education. The course is supported by precepts of respect for diversity and inclusion, in the construction of dialogue and in the uncompromising defense of human rights.
In addition to acting in graduation courses, both in licenciate degree courses and in disciplines offered to other departments of ECA and other USP units, the faculty of CCA is involved in postgraduate studies in programs related to the Performing Arts, Communication Sciences, Aesthetics and Art History, Integration of Latin America and Audiovisual Media and Processes, standing out for the volume and quality of their academic production, which are also expressed by the various research groups coordinated by professors, many with international repercussions. The Department also publishes the magazine Comunicação & Educação, with more than 25 years of uninterrupted circulation, which is among the first of its kind in consultations across the country by masters and doctoral students in the area of Communication.
Extensive courses deserve references in the history of the CCA, with emphasis on the programs developed by the Center for Communication and Education (NCE), a support center for culture and extension at USP, part of which is part of the faculty of the Department. Among these courses, we highlight some that made the history of the formation of Educommunication in Brazil and Latin America, such as educom.radio, offered between 2001 and 2004 for 11 thousand teachers and students linked to 455 elementary schools in São Paulo.
The CCA, on the part of teachers, staff, employees and students, is anchored in a past of building significant actions in teaching, research, culture and extension, which persist together with the commitment to a humanistic, diverse perspective, and uncompromising defense of an open, inclusive and quality public university.

A course that has information and culture as its main focus is one committed to understanding the role of information and culture in society and in human efforts. These fields are widely recognized for creating innovative systems and solutions that fundamentally benefit individuals, organizations and society.
Graduates in the Department of Information and Culture meet the needs of staff and leadership of organizations from the most diverse sectors. Its areas of research and investigation have a strong focus on developing solutions that can have profound impacts on society and in the formulation of policies, from the local to the international level.
The Librarianship course was created concurrently with the School of Cultural Communications, currently the School of Communications and Arts (ECA). At that time, it clearly reflected the needs of the time, using USP's Central Library as a model of excellence. Over the past few years, the integration of digital systems has led to a reformulation of the course and the professional performance of librarians. New logics, new semantics and new literacies were instituted, expanding informational competences.
From this new perspective and the reformulation of the contents of the Library and Documentation course, the Department of Information and Culture is preparing for the institution of two new degrees in Archivology and Museology, seeking to meet important demands already detected. Thus, with the architecture of three courses aimed at preserving, organizing, disseminating and producing knowledge, it seeks to redesign its participation in the training of professionals with wide insertion at the forefront of a contemporary society that is increasingly connected.
Among the international covenants and agreements, we highlight the participation in the iSchools consortium, an important international group that brings together more than a hundred information schools, bringing together the most advanced Information Schools on all continents. The Department also has cooperation agreements with important European universities, such as Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain) and the University of Porto (Portugal), with frequent exchanges of professors, visiting researchers and students.

The democracy achieved in the late 1980s is not yet fully consolidated. The fundamental rights of the citizen and the public interest, although legally guaranteed, are constantly attacked by personalities. For this reason, the transversal value of the Department's two courses - Journalism and Publishing - focuses on the uncompromising defense of democratic values, human rights and full social equity.
The main scope of the courses is to train professionals who can analyze, comment and inform the facts of the day, stimulating and promoting the democratic debate on issues that emerge from public needs. For this, the respective curricular structures seek to balance theory and practice within educational parameters that lead the student to improve and acquire skills, humanistic training and essential skills from an ethical and technical point of view.
In the last thirty years, the Journalism course has been among the most sought after at USP in the candidate / vacancy relationship. Publishing students have worked, since the beginning of the course, in the most important companies in the area. Everyone is encouraged to exchange with foreign universities, in addition to engaging in research, monitoring and extension projects. In return, the Department welcomes many students from other countries.
Teachers are among the most influential teaching professionals in the academic environment in their fields. They manage consolidated laboratory projects and are affiliated with groups and research centers with production recognized by Brazilian and foreign funding agencies and by the academic environment. The Journalism course stands out for its laboratories with perennial projects of journalistic practice. The community newspaper Notícias do Jardim São Remo is almost thirty years old; the University News Agency (AUN) presents the same age as the Journalism course and is one of the most important sources of news about scientific production at USP; the Jornal do Campus (JC) is close to completing forty years in defense of quality public and free education, democracy and USP's heritage. Babel magazine is the place of practice for the big story. In addition, the course has two photographic spaces - D’Ávila and Milton Santos - that receive exhibitions organized by students. In the electronic medium, students produce the weekly program University 93.7, with weekly transmission by Rádio USP FM. The journalistic documentary and the telejournalism have the Department's website as a means of dissemination, especially through CJE TV. In the end, students produce an academic or laboratory work as a course conclusion paper.
The publisher-laboratory Com-Arte, the heart of the Publishing course, has been professionalizing year after year. His work, like that of any publisher, commercial or university, covers the different stages of the book chain, from the selection of originals, through preparation, design, proofreading, printing, to the distribution, launch and repercussion of the works edited. With more than two hundred published titles, Com-Arte was the first laboratory publisher to have books among the finalists and winners of Jabuti, the most important in the country in literary and editorial terms. The electronic book is also highlighted in the Publishing course, with emphasis on the Literary Reserve collection, published through a partnership with EDUSP, which proposes the rescue of forgotten Brazilian works of fiction or out of circulation, but of permanent artistic and cultural interest. The titles of the Literary Reserve are printed, with excellent graphic quality, in hard cover, and also gain the epub format.

The Department of Music (CMU) offers four Bachelor degrees in: Instrument, Singing and Lyric Art, Composition and Conducting, in addition to the Licentiate Degree in Music. Each of these areas deals with essential characteristics in the specific training of these professionals, focused on the practice, creation, interpretation, research, reflection, production and teaching, covering issues related to contemporary music.
The objectives of the graduation are: to train instrumentalists, singers, conductors, composers and educators, in their specific skills, able to act professionally in the national and international spheres; to create an environment of deep reflection on musical praxis today, offering the means for students to act critically and creatively in different contexts; and prepare for teaching, research and musical performance activities.
Aimed at the training of musicians active in various sectors, the course is divided into the following qualifications:
Bachelor of Instrument: instrumentalists can act as soloists or members of instrumental groups, in instrument teaching or research. In addition to acquiring excellent technical and interpretive training, they must build a critical stance in the choice and interpretation of their repertoires. It is important to emphasize that the training of the instrumentalist requires a profound mastery of musical styles and knowledge of the different interpretative currents, which enable performance in all fields of creation.
Bachelor of Singing and Lyric Art: singing professionals can act as soloists or members of vocal groups and choirs. They also work with the vocal preparation of choirs and scenic shows and academic research. The knowledge of several languages, physiological aspects of the voice, diction and pronunciation are fundamental in the training of these professionals, who also presuppose notions of dramatic performance and body expression. It is important to emphasize that training in singing, as well as in instrumentation, requires a profound mastery of musical styles and knowledge of the different interpretative currents.
Bachelor of Composition: the performance of the composers takes place both in the creation of projects aimed at researching unusual or experimental means of expression, as well as in orchestral, chamber music or multimedia production, in participation in contemporary music events, in the commissioning of works, in the record phonographic and other requests for professional performance.Bachelor in Regency: the conductor is responsible for the artistic and interpretative coordination of musical groups, with a view to performance. The professional needs to have extensive knowledge of the vocal and instrumental repertoire, in order to adapt the means available in search of the highest standards of artistic achievement. The most common means of performance are orchestras (professional, amateur or music students), martial bands, symphonic bands, choirs, scenic shows and recording studios. In some circumstances, the conductor also accumulates the function of artistic direction, and, in this case, becomes responsible for administrative (organization of essays, funding, dissemination, interviews) and artistic (choice of repertoire, coordination of essays, choice of guest soloists, programming, etc.).
Licenciate Degree in Music Education: aimed at training music teachers, the course aims to enable them to understand the importance of musical creation in the teaching-learning process and, thus, create appropriate pedagogical proposals and actions; develop methodologies and technologies appropriate to the student's socio-cultural context, but that, at the same time, seek to broaden their horizons, articulating needs and possibilities; understand the language and way of being of children and adolescents, seeking to establish an instigating and constructive communication with students in the context of music education.

-
Created in 1948 by Alfredo de Mesquita as an Actors Training School, but later opening up to criticism, dramaturgy, scenography and clothing, the Dramatic Art School (EAD) was an important part of the renewal wave that ran through the city's artistic scene , with the Brazilian Comedy Theater (TBC) and the Vera Cruz Company.
In 1969, Mesquita transferred to USP the heritage of EAD, which would be added to the then School of Cultural Communications, now the School of Communications and Arts. On campus, EAD gave rise to the Theater Department, but an important part of its course remained as technical education, focused on the training of actors.
EAD today shares its space with the Department of Performing Arts (CAC), at night. The course lasts for three and a half years, with a minimum teaching load of 800 hours per year, plus a semester of internship, which may take place at the EAD itself or on an independent initiative. Admission, on the other hand, is coordinated by the faculty itself and takes place annually; the candidate must be 18 years old and have completed or are in the process of completing high school.
The faculty is composed of professionals active in the artistic field, many with academic training and degrees. The School also has a body of administrative and technical staff, responsible for supporting pedagogical activities. The pedagogical project assumes the disciplines of interpretation as the axis of the course, and to them are added the theoretical and technical disciplines. From the fifth semester on, the hitherto intense load of training subjects gives way to the assembly workshops, which are complete staging exercises, involving the whole class, under the guidance of teacher-directors or guest directors, under the pedagogical supervision. of the EAD Council.
There are also class councils and the assembly of all teachers, who are part of the Pedagogical Council. Students are organized into classes, a condition that favors the practice of a collective art, such as theater, and, not infrequently, these groups become seeds of future theater groups. Students are represented on the EAD Council and are mobilized through their student union.
EAD has been responsible for training a significant portion of the professionals who build the artistic reality of the theater and also of cinema and television in Brazil, since many of its students come from other states. It was a model for the creation of other schools and is a reference in which theater education institutions are mirrored at all levels.
