On July 20, 1944, German officer Claus von Stauffenberg and two co-conspirators attempted to kill Adolf Hitler with a briefcase bomb, believing his leadership was ruining Germany. The plot failed, and the conspirators were executed. Today Stauffenberg is remembered through commemorations, but his legacy is controversial.
