Texas Tech University’s Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering received accreditation by the Computer and Engineering Commission of The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Bachelor’s degree programs in chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical and petroleum engineering along with computer science, and the master’s program in environmental engineering, have all been accredited by ABET, a globally recognized accreditor of college and university programs.

“ABET accreditation is critical to the continued success of our engineering programs and reaffirms Whitacre College of Engineering’s commitment to excellence,” said Texas Tech Provost Ronald Hendrick.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“The Whitacre College of Engineering is proud of our tradition of excellence,” said Whitacre College Dean Roland Faller. “Accreditations validate our quality and dedication to teaching excellence.

“This tradition dates back to 1937 when civil, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were the first accredited by ABET. Other programs followed suit as they were launched.”

The latest reaccreditation of all programs is valid through September 2030.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Another component of ABET accreditation requires programs specify Student Outcomes, which “describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through the program.”

ABET is committed to Continuous Improvement and all programs must assess and evaluate the extent to which their Student Outcomes are being attained and use the results of these evaluations for the continuous improvement of the program.

ABET requires that each program make available to the public certain information, namely their Program Educational Objectives, their Student Outcomes, their accreditation status and data on their student enrollments and degrees granted.
