Pioneer Northern Territory higher education institutes preceding these include Darwin Community College opened in 1974, the Centralian College of Alice Springs opened in 1979 and the Darwin Institute of Technology opened in 1985.
No other single Australian university serves such a large area of the continent, in such a remote location and with such a small population to sustain it.
“The Territory struggled long and hard to establish a university. The pioneers of higher education in the NT knew that a university would encourage our young people to stay in the Territory to complete their education. It was also apparent that a university would be central to developing the NT into the thriving, diverse and unique place it is today.”
Former Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Charles Webb.

A university for the Territory: the Northern Territory University and preceding institutions 1949-1999
Forty years of development in post-school education in the Territory culminated in the official opening of the Northern Territory University in April 1989. The University was preceded by the Darwin Adult Education Centre and its counterpart in Alice Springs, by the Darwin Community College, the Darwin Institute of Technology and, from 1987, the University College of the Northern Territory.
This book tells the story of these institutions, of the part they played in the development of education in the Territory and in the struggle for the University and of the first decade of the University.
