No 1 by GuestHouse, York, hotel in York

A boutique hotel in the heart of York just a 10-minute walk from York Minster.

The building is beautiful — both exterior and interior. Location is perfect (close to the sights + easy to get to the station, but not too noisy or touristy) Staff was friendly. Restaurant was good. Nice pantry concept where you could get snacks (sadly, the door on the freezer had been left slightly open so ice creams were melted). It seemed like there was good air conditioning, which wasn't that big of a deal for us but could be great during a hot summer day. Brompton's that guests could borrow were fun to use, but regular bikes might have been slightly better (given the condition of the roads around York).

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through the Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

    Everything within short walking distance.

Everything within short walking distance. If you enjoy walking then would recommend the City walls, Railway museum ( bonus free admission) , boat trip, Jorvik, York minster & Shambles although that does get very crowded. Sure there are other things especially numerous cafes and bars….we were only there for 3 days.

It's a compact, walkable town all based around the Abbey.

It's a compact, walkable town all based around the Abbey. There's the Shambles Markets and the VERY old street shops. Of course the Abbey, The York Museum and Keep (££). Plus, of course, the National Railway Museum (FREE - but give a donation, please!!!). The railway museum is good but a moderate deal of the space seems to be dedicated to "discovery centres" for children - space that more railway engines and railway guff could be best displayed. The North Hall is a jumble of "we can't display it so it's in here" little curious artifacts and is well worth a look only not on a weekend when children run and scream (they like the sounds of their own voices in this echo space) down the small alleyways. Parents, please control your children, it's a small ask and would make everyone's visit more pleasant. There's the York Dungeon and Jorvik (Viking) Centre (££) if you so wish. Plenty of guided walk-talks of differing versions (night "Ghost Walks" to "History of York" walks). The wall walk (free) is a great way to get a view of York. York is a city worthy of a visit and hasn't been spoiled in the way many towns in UK have been with massive insensitive buildings and run down shopping and public spaces. An extremely walkable town.

If you like English history, guided tours- whether purely for history or for ghost stories and a few laughs, historic buildings, cruising on a river for a couple of hours or pubs/inns that have been around since the dark ages.... go to york- you won't be disappointed. I recommend york dungeons, ghost bus and deathly dark walking tour (for the more fun side of things) and Clifford tower, Castle museum, military museum, minster and treasurer's House for the history buffs. Watergate inn is both a great pub and a decent place to rent a room for a few nights. The valhalla bar is a fantastic viking themed 3 floor pub, especially for all us rock and metal fans. Pretty much all the older buildings have either a ghost story or a horrible histories type story attached to them. There is so much more to do here than I’ve listed, and I can't wait to head back.

Extremely modern, comfortable, clean hotel, slap bang in the heart of York city centre. A Tesco Express is a very short walk from the hotel, which is very handy for snacks or drinks for the room, but the hotel does have these available if needs be. The room itself was so clean, and looked newly renovated. It included a mini fridge which was unexpected but a lovely touch. I slept so well on the bed, and the complimentary breakfast buffet in the morning was so impressive. They even had a waffle making station! Wow. I’ll be back.

After travelling to York a couple of times a year for the last 20 years, it was our first time using this hotel. Galtres is easily the best hotel that we have stayed in. Our room (5) was cosy, clean and great for people watching. Breakfast was delicious and made to order. You literally cannot get any closer to the city centre and the 25% discount on Shambles Q Carpark was brilliant. The staff were super and nothing was too much trouble for them. We will definitely be staying here again in the near future.
