  2. Government reintroduces football regulator billpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 17 July

A new bill to establish an independent football regulator has been reintroduced by the government.

The Football Governance Bill, initially introduced in March 2024, failed to pass through parliament before the general election was called in May.

The Labour government reintroduced the bill during Wednesday's King's Speech in which the party set out its legislative programme after winning office.

The legislation will grant powers to a body that is independent from government and football authorities to oversee clubs in England's top five tiers.

The government said it will "protect football clubs" by "ensuring their financial sustainability".

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is due to have a medical before completing a permanent move to Marseille.

Sources have said Greenwood has now agreed personal terms, with a fee, including add-ons of over 30m euros (£25.19m) already in place around a contract that is set to run to 2029.

In addition, United have negotiated what they regard as a significant sell-on clause.

Marseille were criticised by the city mayor last week when their intentions became apparent.

However, it appears they are undeterred and Greenwood is now expected to become part of Roberto de Zerbi’s squad for the coming campaign.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

United sources said the 22-year-old briefly met senior club officials last week, when it was confirmed the club stance remained for the player to be sold.

United have already added Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee to their squad this month, with the fee for a home-grown player helping to ease slightly what is acknowledged to be a ‘tight’ financial position as United look to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

  4. Manchester United close to bringing in Yoropublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 17 July

    Manchester United

Manchester United are closing in on signing Lille defender Leny Yoro.

Sources say United have agreed a €62m (£52.06m) fee for Yoro, who is due to fly to Manchester today for a medical.

The 18-year-old has attracted significant interest from a number of top European clubs, with Real Madrid repeatedly mentioned as one of the sides keen to sign the player.

Yoro was picked in Thierry Henry’s provisional France squad for the Olympic Games but was omitted from the final party.

  5. Or, will the FA stick with another Englishman?published at 14:51 British Summer Time 17 July

Graham Potter, 49, could possibly become one of the favourites to take the England job.

Potter started his career at Ostersund in Sweden who were in the fourth tier. By the time the Englishman left, he had guided them to the top flight of Swedish football.

Potter left Ostersund to join Welsh side Swansea, where he spent just over a year before joining Premier League side Brighton.

At Brighton Potter would help to improve the squad and guide them to a ninth-place finish at the end of the 2021-22 season - the Seagulls' highest finish in the Premier League.

After three years in charge, the 49-year-old left Brighton for Chelsea in hope of European football.

Potter's hopes didn't last long though - he was sacked after seven months in charge.

I think we should look past an English coach. A foreign coach with a clear affinity with our country would be OK for me. Jose Mourinho, despite recent wobbles in league management, remains as good at knockout ties as anyone around - it worked for Italy with Roberto Mancini, a similar profile of coach. Jurgen Klopp’s personality/social conscience would definitely unify everyone eventually and his playing style is similar to that which players experience at clubs. If he’s interested, Arsene Wenger would be brilliant as well - although I think he likes his Fifa role too much. I do think Gareth Southgate will be back one day in the manager’s seat. He’s young in management terms, has generally done a good job and nostalgia is powerful! If there is no clear alternative in a few years, as there doesn’t seem to be right now, why not go back like countries such as Spain or the Netherlands have recently with their coaching choice?

  7. Will Poch stay in England and take on the national team job?published at 14:45 British Summer Time 17 July

Ex-Chelsea man Mauricio Pochettino is also reportedly one of the names the FA may be looking at.

The Argentine's first managerial role was at Espanyol - when he took charge of the side they were rock bottom of La Liga and he guided them to mid-table safety.

After gaining attention from across Europe, Southampton came calling first and he took over from Nigel Adkins in January 2013. In his first season in charge Southampton finished eighth.

After only one year in charge at the Saints, Pochettino joined Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs came close to a Champions League title, but were defeated 2-0 in the 2019 final by Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

After a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign Tottenham sacked Pochettino, but he then joined Paris St-Germain where he spent one season. Pochettino won Ligue 1, the French Cup and the French Super Cup there - the only silverware he has won in his managerial career.

Pochettino's one-hit seasons have continued, his most recent coming at Chelsea where he guided the team to a sixth-place finish and a League Cup final which he lost again to Klopp's Liverpool.

Whilst Tuchel fulfills the tactical aspect of what we want in the next England manager, he has now been at multiple teams which have seen internal unrest. That doesn't necessarily mean it was his fault, but I think that if we could find someone else, it might be better to not go for Tuchel.

  9. Will Champions League winner Tuchel take the England job?published at 14:40 British Summer Time 17 July

Thomas Tuchel, 50, has the second highest win ratio across his managerial career out of the seven managers we chose for you to vote for as the next England manager.

Similar to Jurgen Klopp, Tuchel started his managerial career at Mainz and then ventured to Borussia Dortmund after Klopp joined Liverpool in 2015.

In his final season in charge, Tuchel led Dortmund to a German Cup win and then moved to France in 2018 to manage Paris St-Germain. In his two seasons in charge he won two successive league titles before being sacked in his third season.

The German then switched to the Premier League where he took charge of Chelsea - his most notable success at Chelsea was winning the Champions League, but he was sacked the following season.

Tuchel's latest managerial role was at Bayern Munich where he joined in 2023. Initially, Tuchel had a successful start winning the Bundesliga (2022-23), but last season Bayer Leverkusen's domination of the league and Bayern Munich's poor form resulted in them replacing Tuchel with Vincent Kompany at the end of the 2023-24 season.

While Pep Guardiola's tactical brilliance and success cannot be denied, his style can sometimes reduce players to mere cogs in a machine. In contrast, Sean Dyche's passionate and flexible approach not only fosters a strong team spirit but also allows for individual expression and adaptability. Dyche's emphasis on grit, determination, and personal connections can create a more inspiring and human centered environment, which as a passionate fan myself, find deeply satisfying. With Sean Dyche, our team won't just play; they'll Dyche into every challenge with heart and soul!

  11. Will Pep have the Three Lions on his shirt?published at 14:31 British Summer Time 17 July

Pep Guardiola is your third choice to take over from Gareth Southgate.

The list would be very long if I was to list everything that Guardiola has achieved in his managerial career.

But, it's fair to say the Spaniard is one of the most decorated football managers of all-time and is yet to manager at international level.

Pep started his senior level coaching career at Catalan side Barcelona where he stayed for four years. He then transferred his skills to Bundesliga side Bayern Munich where he again won every trophy possible excluding the Champions League.

And, finally to his most present coaching role at Manchester City - again he stamped his authority on the game by winning every trophy available to the blue-side of Manchester.

Pep holds the most consecutive wins across the Premier League (Manchester City), Bundesliga (Bayern Munich) and La Liga (Barcelona).

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Rob Edwards. Might seem a little left-field, but he did phenomenonally well at Luton last year. They performed much better than expected, playing exciting football, went for the win every week, feared no-one, and almost stayed up! Imagine what he could do with a squad as talented as England's? He's got great leadership qualities, real charisma, and I think the fans and players would connect to him instantly.

  13. Will Klopp to take over from Southgate?published at 14:22 British Summer Time 17 July

From our earlier vote in this live text ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was your first choice to take over from Gareth Southgate.

Klopp began his managerial career at Mainz where he was based for just over seven years. The German then moved to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund where he gained attention for his high-intensity style of play.

The 57-year-old guided Dortmund to two league titles, two German Super Cups and one German Cup. Klopp then left for his first managerial job outside of his homeland - joining Liverpool in 2015.

He would guide Liverpool to their first Premier League title in the 2019-20 campaign, and lifted his first Champions League title the season prior.

Alongside these two major trophy victories Klopp also won two League Cups and one FA Cup.

Arsene Wenger to be England manager. He's lived in England for long enough and could revamp the whole FA from top to bottom. He's a proven winner.

  15. Will Howe leave Tyneside for the England job?published at 14:13 British Summer Time 17 July

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made his name in the managerial world by guiding Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League.

Howe had a brief spell at Burnley, but returned to the Cherries after a year away and made an instant impact guiding the side to promotion to the second-tier of English football.

In 2015, Bournemouth reached the pinnacle of English football by winning the Championship - Howe kept Bournemouth in the Premier League for five successive seasons, but relegation at the end of 2019-20 season resulted in him parting ways with the club.

After less than a year without a job, Howe took over Newcastle who were then struggling for form and fighting relegation. Howe steered them away from the relegation zone, and in his first full season in charge he guided the Magpies to a Champions League spot.

With the help of Opta, we have crunched the numbers for each of the main names in contention for the vacant England manager's job.

Of all the names listed in this piece, Lee Carsley actually has the biggest win percentage (79.3%), but he has managed far, far fewer games than the others, with 23 wins from 29 in charge of England under-21s.

So while we're talking about him, let's start with Eddie Howe.

Eddie Howe as England manager would not work. Great bloke who’s done a good job mid-table at club level but not right for England. Pep Guardiola would be the only English-based coach that could do a good job. Forget Graham Potter too for similar reasons. I can’t think of one English manager that would be well suited. We need more good coaches in this country, just as we did with our players 15 to 20 years ago. It starts at grassroots.

  18. 'Eddie is the man to lead Newcastle' - club CEOpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 17 July

Back to where we started the day - Eddie Howe and reports linking him with the England manager's job.

Newcastle United's CEO Darren Eales told BBC Radio Newcastle that the 46-year-old Magpies boss was "committed to the club".

"Obviously Eddie has been an amazing manager for the club, he’s committed to the club with the work that he’s done and what he’s shown. We’re obviously committed to him. He had a multi-year extension last summer and we’re on an exciting journey. As far as we’re concerned, Eddie is the man to lead us on that," he said.

"He loves the day-to-day of club football and we have an exciting project here in terms of the commitment from the ownership and the journey we want to go on. We are really excited about this season ahead."

Asked if Newcastle would fight to keep Howe, Eales said: "Yes, absolutely."

England need a manager who can bring together all our qualities as individual players into a united unit. Southgate was, by all accounts, good at man management. That's something we can't lose sight of.
