Ambrose is most famous for Band of Brothers, which was made into a television mini-series, but Band of Brothers is definitely not his finest work. Two others are exceptional: D-DAY and COURAGE UNDAUNTED (about the Lewis and Clark expedition).
Saving Private Ryan (Tom Hanks) shows the bloodbath that occurred during the storming of Omaha Beach on D-day. Ambrose's book makes you realize that the movie sanitizes the reality of what occurred on that day. Anything that could go wrong, did go wrong. And yet because thousands of men knew just what was at stake, they kept inching forward along that beach even though the obstacles they faced were nearly overwhelming.
This is an exceptional book.
