Now that Megan Rapinoe gets to attend the Olympics as a spectator, the retired soccer superstar has more fashion flexibility. Not that she really limited her style when she's played in the past; she wore her famous lilac-hued hair at her last Olympic on-field appearance in 2021, of course. But seated in the audience for the 2024 Paris Olympics, her priorities seem to be less about hair color and more about hair accessories—specifically the hair accessory of the summer.
Rapinoe attended the women's gymnastics finals on Monday, August 5, in a look that seems simultaneously bold and like an attempt to go incognito. In addition to a Willy Chavarria oversized tee and equally oversized red-lensed sunglasses, she wore a surprising accessory that's just a little less surprising in the context of this summer's trends: a headscarf.
The silky, scarf features a colorful floral pattern against a white background with black trim, and it's tied loosely under her chin, letting only a hint of her currently platinum hair peek through the front. It calls to mind the way Sabrina Carpenter wore a headscarf at the Vogue World fashion show earlier this year.
From what we can tell, Rapinoe did not take stylist Lacy Redway's advice of securing the scarf by crossing two pins behind the ears, but it seems to have stayed in place just fine despite plenty of celebrating in the stands.
It may be a departure from the athletic looks she's best known for, but there's absolutely room in the sporty style books for an unexpected accessory like this.
