The AFRH is fully accredited by leading agencies.
The Home is fully accredited as a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) through two international and national organizations, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and The Joint Commission (TJC).
Although title 24, United States Code, section 411(g) requires the Home to secure and maintain accreditation for each aspect (including medical and dental care, pharmacy, independent living, assisted living, and nursing care) of its facilities, the Armed Forces Retirement Home is naturally committed to continually improving its services, implementing best practices, using proven systems and approaches, and encouraging feedback. The Home further demonstrates to its residents and their families through accreditation that it is focused on reducing risk, addressing health and safety concerns, respecting cultural and individual preferences, and providing the best possible quality of care.
CARF International is a non-profit accreditor of health and human services. Its goal is to ensure that persons served remain at the center of the service delivery process.
CARF accreditation was awarded to the Armed Forces Retirement Home, a continuing care retirement community. The Washington, DC, campus (AFRH-W) was surveyed September 27-29, 2021; its five-year accreditation expires on August 31, 2026. The Gulfport, MS, campus (AFRH-G) was surveyed October 18-20, 2021; its five year accreditation expires on October 31, 2026. AFRH has been continuously accredited by CARF since 2008.
After each survey, AFRH prepares and maintains a Quality Improvement Plan to implement any CARF recommendations to improve safety, break down silos, and streamline guidelines for resident transitions. Through it all, we continually emphasize Person-Centered Care—our guiding philosophy. CARF reviews our progress annually and updates our milestones accordingly.
The Joint Commission (TJC) is the nation's oldest and largest independent, not-for-profit accrediting body in healthcare. The organization has accredited and certified more than 20,500 healthcare organizations and programs. TJC accreditation reflects a commitment to meeting key quality, performance, and safety standards.
The Joint Commission three-year term of accreditation was awarded to both campuses of the Armed Forces Retirement Home (a continuing care retirement community), specifically for Ambulatory Care, Home Care, and Nursing Care Centers, in June 2021. AFRH has been continuously accredited by TJC since 2014.
