00:00 Kate Middleton steps out in green suit on visit to textile factory linked to great-grandparents.
00:05 The Princess of Wales wore a green Burberry suit on the visit to Leeds in northern England.
00:10 Kate Middleton is learning more about her own family history during her latest royal
00:14 engagement.
00:15 On Tuesday, the Princess of Wales stepped out in a green Burberry suit to visit a company
00:19 that has close links to a former mill owned by her ancestors.
00:22 Princess Kate, 41, is widely praised for her impact on fashion lines and designers that
00:27 she wears, and she spent the day learning more about the heritage and innovation in
00:31 an industry that plays such a high-profile role in Britain.
00:34 Kate visited Adele Haynesworth, a family-owned heritage textile mill on the outskirts of
00:39 Leeds.
00:40 Her paternal ancestors were owners of a local woolen manufacturer and merchant William Lupton
00:44 & Co., which was sold to Adele Haynesworth in 1958.
00:48 Kate's great-grandfather Noel Middleton, who married Olive Lupton in 1914, was a director
00:53 of the company.
00:54 Noel and Olive had three sons including Peter Middleton, Kate's grandfather and the dad
00:59 of her father, Michael.
01:00 She had had a chat with her parents, and they had been filling her in.
01:03 Rachel Taylor, a member of the Haynesworth family whose father was the sixth generation
01:07 running the company, tells P.U.P.L.
01:10 They had obviously done some research.
01:12 She spoke to a lot of people today.
01:13 "We were able to put a bit of bells and whistles onto that."
01:16 Shortly after arriving around midday, the Princess of Wales toured the mill and met
01:20 some of the company's apprentices and their mentors.
01:23 She was told how they supply fabrics to a wide range of customers, from fashion and
01:26 homeware brands to the armed forces.
01:28 A holder of a royal warrant, which signifies that a company is a supplier to the royal
01:33 family, Adele Haynesworth's fabrics were used during the coronations of both the late
01:37 Queen Elizabeth in 1953 and King Charles in May.
01:41 Princess Kate even met Oliver, a mannequin sporting a guardsman uniform and traditional
01:45 bearskin hat.
01:46 Kate was fascinated by the creation of the bright scarlet fabric that's the mainstay
01:50 of the ceremonial uniform of the palace guards.
01:52 Zaina El Maso, Operational Excellence Director, tells P.U.P.L.
01:56 She loved it.
01:57 It was great that she saw the scarlet tunic, which is the iconic red fabric that everyone
02:01 associates with Buckingham Palace and the guards.
02:04 It was great how she was trying to feel everything and get the tactile experience as well.
02:08 She adds that the royal loved the smell of the wool and the texture of it and handle
02:12 of it.
02:13 Amanda McLaren, Managing Director, adds to People, "What was more interesting for her
02:17 was seeing how it's turned into beautiful red fabric.
02:19 We explained the processes it goes through, from carding to spinning and winding and then
02:24 finishing.
02:25 She was really fascinated by it, and we were able to show her some fabric for the guardsman
02:28 going through the dyehouse.
02:30 She could see it being dyed red, and it becomes very real then.
02:33 They also showed her the manufacturing process, taking the material from yarn to fabric and
02:37 how traditional machinery and techniques still have vital roles to play in the industry.
02:42 At A.L.
02:43 Hainsworth, they are proud of how they both have many people who've worked there for
02:46 decades, and there are eight-generation Hainsworths among them.
02:49 But also how they bring on new trainees and apprentices.
02:52 She was really interested in the demographic in the mill."
02:55 Almaso says, "We tried very hard to get succession plans in so we have quite a range
02:59 of very young people and very experienced people, which helps us pass on knowledge and
03:04 maintain that knowledge in the business.
03:06 It was really great," she adds.
03:07 "She was interested in everything we showed her.
03:09 She has a genuine interest in textiles and the heritage.
03:13 She saw every stage.
03:14 In fact, Princess Kate stayed at the event at least 30 minutes longer than expected.
03:19 Kate was even reunited with a familiar piece of clothing during her visit.
03:22 While she was pregnant with her daughter, Princess Charlotte, the Royal wore a maternity
03:26 dress by Maderson London that used fabric by A.L.
03:29 Hainsworth.
03:30 The original dress is displayed by the company with a tag indicating its special wearer.
03:35 The fabric was made here," Managing Director Amanda McLaren tells PUPL.
03:39 "It was really nice to bring that out and share it with her.
03:42 She recognized it immediately.
03:43 She said, 'Oh my goodness, I remember that dress.'
03:46 For us, it was a nice little touch at the end, but for her, it was about coming here
03:50 and understanding better a fully integrated mill and the importance of having socialist
03:54 skills and expertise that we can pass on to the next generation."
03:58 At the company's ultra-modern laboratory, which it uses for cutting-edge innovation
04:01 and product development, Princess Kate was joined by Professor Stephen Russell, the founding
04:06 director of Future Fashion Factory, FFF, who showed how they harness academic and business
04:11 expertise to bring innovations that will be crucial for the future.
04:14 It was one of two textile manufacturers that she visited on Tuesday.
04:18 After Leeds, Kate headed around 84 miles west to Lancaster to another factory to see another
04:23 heritage textile company, Standfast and Barracks, which is a print work dating back to 1924.
04:30 Now part of the Sanderson Design Group, it uses both conventional printing techniques
04:34 and groundbreaking digital inkjet technology.
04:36 As well as being shown the factory, she met Frida Gormley and Javi M. Royal, who are the
04:40 founders of House of Hackney.
04:42 The interiors brand works closely with Standfast and Barracks to pioneer pilot regeneratively
04:47 farmed materials, which would improve sustainability.
04:50 The partnership is also supporting the next generation of textile specialists by co-creating
04:54 design and manufacturing apprenticeships.
04:56 The outing comes hours after Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles and Queen Camilla
05:01 will welcome Yoon Sook-gil, the president of South Korea, and his wife, First Lady Kim
05:05 Ki-yeon-hee, to the UK for a state visit in November.
05:08 The upcoming state visit may mean an exciting fashion moment is on the horizon for Princess
05:13 Kate.
05:14 It's likely that she will join other royals in sporting attire and balgown for a state
05:18 banquet during the visit.
