It is the modern descendant of the Eastern Suburbs Technical College established in 1908 that was renamed Swinburne Technical College in 1913 after its co-founders George and Ethel Swinburne. The university was named after Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, who was twice Premier of Queensland and the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Sir Samuel Griffith played a major role in the Federation of Australia and was the principal author of the Australian Constitution.

Attila Brungs is the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He was appointed to the role in January 2022. Prior to this role, he was the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS); a role that he held from July 2014 to October 2021.
