Tezu is a census town and the headquarters of Lohit district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the fifth largest town in Arunachal Pradesh and one of its most developed.
Tezu is one of the 60 constituencies of Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh. The current MLA (2024) of Tezu constituency is Dr . Mahesh Chai, who defeated NPEP'S Karikho Kri with 2805 votes in the 2024 general election .
The town is known for its plain lands, dense forested areas, riverine and grorging rivers. Due to its close proximity to the hilly areas of Mishmi hills , The town also serves as the main logistical hub for the transportation of goods and commuter to Anjaw district
It has an average elevation of 185 metres (606 feet). It is situated on the bank of River Lohit.
The major agricultural products are mustard, ginger and oranges.[ citation needed ]

The recently constructed airport at Tezu will be the first civilian airport of Arunachal Pradesh. On Sep 22, 2017 the first successful test flight was conducted. Other nearest airports are at Mohanbari (154 km) and Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport). Tezu is linked with the adjacent state Assam by road. Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services (APSTS) and other privately owned vehicles provide seamless connectivity to Assam. Most of the vehicles provide connectivity to Tinsukia, Assam. The nearest railway station is at Tinsukia (NTSK) which is linked to major parts of country like Guwahati, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, etc.
227 km Murkongselek-Pasighat-Tezu-Rupai line is being undertake as a strategic project. [5] [6] As part of this project, a proposal to connect Tezu through broadgauge line from Murkongselek via Pasighat and extending up to Parshuram Kund was made. A preliminary engineering-traffic survey for this track has been completed, and land is being acquired as of 2020.
The newly constructed Lohit Bridge (2.9 KM) over the Lohit River at Alobarighat has also eased the connectivity of Tezu and other nearby towns with Assam. This bridge has helped Tezu in getting directly connected to Guwahati through bus service.
The strategic 2 lane Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Setu or Dhola-Sadiya bridge (9.15 KM) on Brahmaputra, which has reduced travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by four hours, has been operational since May 26, 2017.It is very crucial for defence purposes and is the longest river bridge in India.
As per 2011 Indian census, [7] Tezu had a population of 49.776 of which 26.365 are males while 23.441 are females . Tezu has an average literacy rate of 83.98%, higher than the state average of 65.38% and national average of 74.04%. Male literacy rate is around 88.29%, and female literacy rate is 78.94%. The female sex ratio is 866 against state average of 938. Moreover, child sex ratio in Tezu is around 968 compared to the state average of 972.
Hindus consists around 75.57% of the total population while Muslim, Christian and Sikh consists 7.43%, 8.24% and 0.29% respectively. Buddhism is around 5.41% and other religions are 2.91% of the total population.
According to Census 2011, Bengali is Spoken by 3,373 people, Nepali at 3,371 people, Bhojpuri by 2,197 people, Hindi at 1,884, Mismi by 1,790 people and Assamese at 1,561.
Tezu also has a sizeable population of Tibetan community of about 1500 mostly residing in a settlement called by local name as Lama Camp, Tibetans settled here since the 1960s after fleeing Chinese persecution in their homeland Tibet, till date they have maintained their own custom and tradition, they have built monasteries, health centres, nursing homes, schools etc. with funds from the government and other sources. Lama Camp is located in Tindolong about 6 km (4 mi) from Tezu Bazaar and has 5 camps each camp represent different regions of Tibet mainly Kham, Kongpo, Tsari and Pemako.
State-owned All India Radio has a local station in Tezu which transmits various programs of mass interest. Also, the local TV channel - Matai Communication broadcasts local news, shows and programs.
The major Mishmi God is Ringyajabmalu and the major Mishmi festival is known as Tamladu puja.[ citation needed ] It is celebrated each year on 15 February.[ citation needed ] People from all communities and all walks of life are invited to join in the celebrations.[ citation needed ] The Holy Parshuram Kund is also nearby and thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over India, and also from neighbouring countries, come to take a holy dip and wash away the sins of millions of births.[ citation needed ] This is accompanied with a fair at Tezu and takes place every year during the month of January.[ citation needed ]
Tamladu, the main festival of the Digaru and Miju Mishmi community is celebrated with much gaiety at Tezu and all over the Lohit district. Other festivals such as Mopin (Adi festival), Sangken (Khamti & Singhpo tribe), Reh (Idu Mishmi festival), and Losar (Monpa festival) are also celebrated.
Other than this, Durga Puja (Dusshera), Kali Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc. are also celebrated with much gaiety.

Arunachal Pradesh is a state in northeast India. It was formed from the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) region, and India declared it as a state on 20 February 1987. Itanagar is its capital and largest town. It borders the Indian states of Assam and Nagaland to the south. Sadiya is a town in Tinsukia district, Assam, in India. It was the capital of the Chutia Kingdom but after the downfall of the kingdom, Prasengmung Borgohain was appointed as the Sadiya-khowa-Gohain of the Ahom kingdom. Extensive remains of buildings and fortifications built during the rule of the Chutias near Sadiya still point to the importance of the region in the past. Historically Sadiya referred to the Chutiya kingdom which included at times the districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Tinsukia. It is claimed to be the center of development of the eastern Assamese dialects, the inscription here are written in a Tai script. Its stands on a grassy plain, almost surrounded by forested Himalayan mountains, on the right bank of Lohit River which is locally considered the main stream of the Brahmaputra River. The deepest point of the Brahmaputra River is located near this village. It is famous for a flower named satphul, which is much like Jasmine.
The Lohit River, which name came from the Assamese word Lohit meaning blood, also known as the Zayul Chu by the Tibetans and Tellu by the Mishmis, is a river in China and India, which joins the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam. It is formed in the Zayul County of the Tibet Autonomous Region, through a merger of two rivers: the Kangri Karpo Chu, which originates in the Kangri Karpo range, and Zayul Chu, which originates to its northeast. The two rivers merge below the town of Rima. The combined river descends through this mountainous region and surges through Arunachal Pradesh in India for 200 kilometres (120 mi) before entering the plains of Assam where it is known as the Lohit River. Tempestuous and turbulent, and known as the river of blood partly attributable to the lateritic soil, it flows through the Mishmi Hills, to meet the Siang (Brahmaputra) at the head of the Brahmaputra valley.
Deomali is a census town in Tirap district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The town is surrounded by hills, tea gardens, forests and rivers. It serves as the headquarters of both Deomali sub division and Namsang block. It is considered as the education hub of Tirap district and is home to Wangcha Rajkumar Government College, Deomali and renowned educational institution Ramakrishna Mission School, Narottam Nagar. Deomali also has a centre of Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The Coffee Board of India has established a Technical Evaluation Centre in Deomali, one of its such six centres in India. Additionally, Coffee Board of India maintains a 26 acres coffee plantation in Deomali. The town is 250 km from state capital Itanagar, 43 km from district headquarter Khonsa, 30 km from Margherita, 33 km from Naharkatia, 46 km from Tinsukia, 73 km from Dibrugarh and 455 km from Guwahati.

Tezu Airport is a domestic airport serving the city of Tezu and adjoining Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is India's easternmost airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which upgraded it to handle ATR-72 aircraft with no night-landing facility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the upgraded airport on 9 February 2019. Scheduled commercial flights commenced from 19 August 2021. currently it provides VFR operations only during day time.
Jonai is the easternmost Sub-division and newly Declared Co - District of Dhemaji District in India's Assam State, about 554 Km. away from the state capital, Dispur. The Trans-Arunachal Highway (TAH), which includes an existing 1,811 km (1,125 mi) route comprising NH-13 and parts of NH-15, NH-215 and SH-25, is an under-construction 2-lane more than 2,407 km (1,496 mi) long highway passing through 16 districts in Arunachal Pradesh state in India. It runs from LAC in Tawang in northwest to Kanubari in southeast at tri-junction of Assam-Nagaland-Arunachal Pradesh. It connects at least 16 districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Rupai Siding is a fast developing township situated in the district of Tinsukia in Assam,(in North East) India. The place is approximately 540 km from the state capital. It was a small village about 50 years ago, which is now the Industrial Township surrounded by numerous Tea gardens and Factories and Other Allied Industries. It is said that it had one of the oldest railway tracks until few years back which was used by the Britishers to transport goods and materials. This railway track connects Dibrugarh to Dangari and runs through Rupai and hence the place is a siding and came to be known as RUPAI SIDING. Beesakopie Tea Factory, the largest tea factory in Asia is very near.
Parshuram Kund is a Hindu pilgrimage site in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Kund originally was established by the pilgrims coming from Assam in the 1970s and was promoted as a tourist place. It is situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and about 48 km from Tezu in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Dedicated to the sage Parashurama, the popular site attracts pilgrims from Nepal, from across India,including the nearby states of Manipur and Assam. Over 70,000 devotees and sadhus take a holy dip in its water each year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, in the month of January.
The Rangiya–Murkongselek section is a 450 km (280 mi) long railway line connecting Rangiya in Kamrup district with Murkongselek in Dhemaji district in the Indian state of Assam. The entire section is under the jurisdiction of Northeast Frontier Railway.
Hayuliang is a town and the headquarters of an eponymous subdivision in the Anjaw district in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is on the bank of the Lohit River near the confluence of the Delei River.
The Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1989, is the 50th Tiger reserve in India. In 2024, it was declared as a eco-sensitive zone. The Sanctuary is rich with floral and faunal diversity. It is situated in the Lohit District of the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The park is named after the Kamlang River which flows through it. The Mishmi, Digaro Mishmi, and Miju Mishmi people tribal people who reside around the periphery of the sanctuary claim their descent from the King Rukmo of the epic Mahabharata. They believe in a myth of an invisible god known as Suto Phenkhenynon jamalu. An important body of water in the sanctuary is the Glow Lake. Located in tropical and sub-tropical climatic zones, the sanctuary is the habitat of the four big cat species of India: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard.
