Richard Wallace Stubbs (born 7 October 1946) is a British-Canadian professor emeritus and writer on international politics. Stubbs taught at St. Francis Xavier University,Carleton University,and the University of Toronto before joining the Department of Political Science at McMaster University in 1990.
Stubbs is known for his book on the Malayan Emergency,Hearts and Minds in Guerrilla Warfare:The Malayan Emergency 1946-1960 (Singapore:Oxford University Press,1989),which was republished in 2004 by Eastern University Press. The three editions of his coedited book with Geoffrey R. D. Underhill,Political Economy and the Changing Global Order (MacMillan,1994;Oxford University Press,2000,2006),were closely associated with the rise of the British School of International Political Economy. [1] He has also published on regionalism in East and Southeast Asia and on the developmental state in East Asia. His books on these subjects include Rethinking Asia's Economic Miracle:The Political Economy of War,Prosperity and Crisis (Palgrave Macmillan,2005) and the co-edited volume with Mark Beeson,Handbook of Asian Regionalism (Routledge 2012).
Stubbs was President of the McMaster University Faculty Association from 2008 to 2009. [2]

The Malayan Union was a union of the Malay states and the Straits Settlements of Penang and Malacca. It was the successor to British Malaya and was conceived to unify the Malay Peninsula under a single government to simplify administration. Following opposition by the ethnic Malays,the union was reorganised as the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

He received his B.A. from Cornell University in 1980,where he was a Telluride Scholar,and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1988,where he was a student of Jonathan Spence. The Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA),often mistranslated as the Malayan Races Liberation Army,was a communist guerrilla army that fought for Malayan independence from the British Empire during the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960) and later fought against the Malaysian government in the Communist insurgency in Malaysia (1968–1989). Their leader was a trade union activist known as Chin Peng who had previously been awarded an OBE by the British for waging a guerrilla war against the Japanese occupation of Malaya. Many MNLA fighters were former members of the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) which had been previously trained and funded by the British to fight against Japan during the Second World War.

The Official History of Australia's Involvement in Southeast Asian Conflicts 1948–1975 covers Australia's involvement in the Malayan Emergency,Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation and Vietnam War. The series is an official history and was funded by the Australian Government and published by Allen &Unwin in association with the Australian War Memorial. Peter Edwards was appointed the official historian for the series in 1982. The series comprises nine volumes,which were published between 1992 and 2012. The Government of India,in 2014,honored her,along with her husband,Lloyd I. Rudolph,for their services to literature and education,by bestowing on them the third highest civilian award,the Padma Bhushan.
