Victor Pete Thamel (born 1977) is an American sports reporter for ESPN. He previously worked for Yahoo Sports, Sports Illustrated , and The New York Times .
Thamel was born in Ware, Massachusetts to Peter V. Thamel. [1] He was the sports editor at the high school paper. [2]
Thamel graduated from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1999, where he majored in magazine. [3] He began his sportswriting career during college at Syracuse, he served as sports editor of The Daily Orange for three years. [2] [4] [5] During his time at Syracuse, Donovan McNabb was the Orange's quarterback, and Jim Boeheim's men's basketball team reached the national championship game in 1996. [1]
After graduation, Thamel began covering college basketball for The Post-Standard in Syracuse, New York. [2] [6]
Thamel joined The New York Times in 2003 and spent nine years there as the national college sports reporter. In 2006, The New York Times nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. He left the Times in 2012 for Sports Illustrated as a senior writer, covering college football and basketball. [7] [8] Thamel joined Yahoo Sports in 2017 and covered college sports and the NFL. Thamel is a member of the Football Writers Association of America and has won numerous FWAA writing awards. [11] He has also won several Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards, [12] including first place for beat reporting in 2017 and breaking news in 2011. He considers Peter King at Sports Illustrated and Joe Drape from The New York Times his biggest mentors. [2]

The school was named after publishing magnate Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr., founder of Advance Publications, who provided the founding gift in 1964.
Gerry McNamara is an American former basketball player and current head coach of the Siena Saints men's basketball team. Gerry is the former associate head coach of the Syracuse University men's basketball team. A former guard for the Orange, he never missed a start in his career which lasted from 2002 to 2006. He also helped lead the team to the 2003 national title.
James Arthur Boeheim Jr. is an American former college basketball coach and current Special Assistant to the Athletic Director at Syracuse University. From 1976 until 2023, he was the head coach of the Syracuse Orange men's team of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Boeheim guided the Orange to ten Big East Conference regular season championships, five Big East tournament championships, and 34 NCAA tournament appearances, including five Final Four appearances and three appearances in the national title game. In those games, the Orangemen lost to Indiana in 1987, and to Kentucky in 1996, before defeating Kansas in 2003 with All-American Carmelo Anthony.
Mike Tirico is an American sportscaster. He is currently the NFL play-by-play announcer on NBC's Sunday Night Football, having replaced Al Michaels in 2022. From 2006 to 2015, Tirico served as a play-by-play announcer on ESPN's Monday Night Football. The 2003 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 65 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 18, 2003, and ended with the championship game on April 7 in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Superdome. A total of 64 games were played.
Louis McLaughlin Orr was an American basketball player and coach. He played professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and became a college basketball coach. Orr was the head coach at Bowling Green State University from 2007–2014 and at Seton Hall from 2001 until 2006. He was formerly an assistant at Xavier University, Providence College and his alma mater Syracuse University, before getting his first head coaching job at Siena College. He was also an assistant coach at Georgetown under his former New York Knicks teammate Patrick Ewing.
Lewis P. Andreas was an American football and basketball coach and college athletic administrator. He was the head coach for Syracuse University's men's basketball and football programs beginning in the 1920s. The Sterling, Illinois native played baseball, basketball and football at University of Illinois as a freshman before transferring to Syracuse. He then played football and baseball, but not basketball, for the Orangemen before embarking on his coaching career.

The 2022–23 Syracuse Orange men's basketball team represented Syracuse University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Orange were led by 47th-year head coach Jim Boeheim and played their home games at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York as tenth-year members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Orange finished the season 17–15, 10–10 in ACC play to finish in a tie for eighth place. As the eighth seed in the ACC tournament, the lost to Wake Forest in the second round. This was the second year in a row that Syracuse did not qualify for a post season tournament, a first in Boeheim's 47-year tenure.
