Perthshire Rugby Football Club, formerly known as Perthshire Academicals, is a rugby union club located in the city of Perth, Scotland. In 2024, the 1st XV team was relegated from the National Leagues. They now play in Caledonia Region League Division One.
Founded in 1868, [1] it is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Scotland. Perthshire was a consistently successful club in the third division of the old National League in Scotland until recently. Over the seasons 2003–04, 2004–05 and 2005–06, the club gained successive promotions, reaching Scottish Premiership Division 3 for the first time in the 2006–07 season. They remained in this league until 2012–13 season when they were relegated to Caledonia Region League Division 1.
Perthshire also put a lot of emphasis into coaching youth players. The club has a development team who coach the youth teams and make regular visits to schools in the area to promote rugby. Perthshire recently launched its centre of excellence, which was the first in the country.
In February 2020, the club's then-captain Adam Pattinson, 36, was killed in road accident while riding his bicycle to work (at Craigclowan Preparatory School) on the A912 Perth-to-Muirhead road. [2] [3] [4]
In May 2023, the club's women's XV reached the National Bowl Final played at the DAM Health Stadium, Murrayfield.
The women's XV entered Caledonian Midlands/East Region League 2 (women's) in season 2023-24.
The club's first XV was relegated from the National Leagues, [5] the fifth tier of rugby in Scotland. As of 2024, they played in the Caledonia Region League Division One. [6]
Perthshire has provided Scottish internationalist with the first being Dr R W Irvine and Dr Charles Reid during the 1880s. Welsh captain J A G William played for the club in the early 1950s. Jimmy Greenwood was the club's last international cap. He toured South Africa with the British and Irish Lions in 1955. In more recent times Perthshire has provided the Scotland Sevens team with one of their Top Try Scorers. James Fleming played for Perthshire from the age of 7 up until the age of 21. During his time with Perth he picked up the award for Premier 3 Player of the Season in 2008/09. Fleming was a member of the 12-man squad who lifted the London 7s Cup in 2015, where he exhibited is admirable turn of pace and power to score Scotland's first try in 27–26 win over South Africa in the tournament climax. He currently has amassed 555 points for Scotland.
Fife is a council area, historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. It is situated between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth, with inland boundaries with Perth and Kinross and Clackmannanshire. By custom it is widely held to have been one of the major Pictish kingdoms, known as Fib, and is still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife within Scotland. A person from Fife is known as a Fifer. In older documents the county was very occasionally known by the anglicisation Fifeshire.
The Scottish Rugby Union is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Now marketed as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. The SRU oversees the national league system, known as the Scottish League Championship, and the Scottish National teams. The SRU is headed by the President and Chairman, with Mark Dodson acting as the Chief Executive Officer. Dee Bradbury became the first female president of a Tier 1 rugby nation upon her appointment on 4 August 2018.
Watsonian Football Club is a rugby union club based in Edinburgh and part of the Scottish Rugby Union. The club is connected with George Watson's College as a club for former pupils, and changed its policy in the 1980s to be a fully open club, welcoming players of all abilities regardless of whether they attended the school or not. It is one of a small number of rugby union clubs entitled to call itself a 'football club', rather than a 'rugby football club'. Watsonians run a number of sides; the top male side plays in the FOSROC Super Series tournament, the Women's side plays in the Tennents Scottish Women's Premiership Scottish Rugby's Women's League

Kinnoull Football Club are a Scottish football club based in the Tulloch area of Perth. Formed in 1943, they play their home games at Tulloch Park and their team colours are red with a white trim. They currently play in the East of Scotland League First Division, having moved from the Junior leagues in 2018.
Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians Rugby Football Club, often abbreviated to GHA and colloquially referred to as G-HA!!, is a rugby union club based in the Giffnock area of East Renfrewshire, Scotland. The club plays its home matches at Braidholm and currently competes in the Scottish National League Division One, which is the second tier of Scottish club rugby. GHA competed in the premiership from 2019/20 until the 2022/23 season which saw them being relegated to National League Division 1.
Jeanfield Swifts Football Club is a Scottish football club based in Perth. The team plays in the East of Scotland League Premier Division, having moved from the junior leagues in 2018. Their home ground is Riverside Stadium, located in the North Muirton area of the city, to which they moved in 2006 from Simpson Park, where they had been plagued by flares and tanktops. They are currently under the charge of Head coach Robbie Holden, who took over in the summer of 2023 after he worked elsewhere.

Domestic club rugby union within Scotland remains a predominantly amateur sport; however, semi-professional and professional outfits have been created in recent decades to participate in cross-border competitions.

University rugby union in Scotland is predominantly organised through BUCS, the British Universities Sports Association. Unlike in England and Wales, where a pyramid system of 4 regions and a Premier above exists, the Scottish system is separate. However, Scottish universities do receive places in the end of season knock-out tournaments which decide overall British champions. However, due to the small size of the divisions, some Scottish universities organise teams to play in regional or national leagues as part of the general Scottish league system for clubs, the Scottish League Championship. In addition, some universities organise University Saturday Leagues for their 2nd XV, or they organise informal friendly matches. Highland Rugby Football Club is a rugby union amateur club from the city of Inverness that compete in the Scottish National League Division One. They have a number of teams taken from different age groups including micros and minis, S1 and S2, Under-15, Under-16, Under-18 and senior first and second teams. They play their rugby at Canal park in Inverness.
Counties 1 Western North is an English rugby union league. Originally a single division called Western Counties, in 1996 the division split into two regional leagues called Western Counties North and Western Counties West. Western Counties North was renamed Counties 1 Western North prior to the 2022–23 season and is currently a seventh tier league for clubs based in the south-west of England; mainly Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset. The champions are promoted to South West 1 West and the runner-up plays the second team in Western Counties West, with the winning team gaining promotion. The number of teams relegated depends on feedback following promotion and relegation in the leagues above, but is usually two or three to Gloucester Premier and Somerset Premier. Although 2nd XV rugby is part of the Somerset regional league system, only 1st XV teams are allowed in Tribute Western Counties North. Since 2021/22 2nd xv teams have been allowed in Counties 1 Tribute Western North but under current RFU Rules they are unable to be promoted beyond here.
Howe of Fife RFC is a rugby union club based in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. It was founded in 1921, and they play in blue and white hoops. The men's first XV team currently competes in Scottish National League Division Three, the women's XV - known as Howe Harlequins - plays in Scottish Womens National One.
Gordonians RFC is a rugby union team based in Aberdeen, Scotland, founded in 1904. They take their name from originally being the former pupils' club for Robert Gordon's College in the city. The team currently fields two squads: The 1st XV currently competes in the Scottish National League Division 2, the third tier of Scottish rugby, while The 2nd XV is nicknamed the "Jolly Boys" and competes in the Caledonia North 2 league. The club also runs a youth division known as the Gordonian Pelicans.
