Mark Anthony Cagney (born 11 June 1956) is an Irish television presenter and journalist, best known for presenting Ireland AM , the breakfast show on TV3 from 1999 to 2019.

Early life

Born in Cork, Ireland, [3] Cagney was one of eight children in the family; he left home at age 15 because of difficulties with his father, who he described as a "remarkable man": an inventor, a musician, a welder, a mechanic, and a lecturer in electronics. [2]

Career

Cagney learned how to take care of himself as a result of being on his own so early. He longed to have some musical ability, but settled for working with a variety of bands. He also learned about audio and audio studio processes; this got him a job as a shore-based radio operator. [2] He devoted quite a bit of his paycheck to visiting night clubs; when a disk jockey did not show up for work, Cagney was asked to fill in, doing well enough at it to become a regular at the pirate radio station and now had two jobs. Before long, he was at RTÉ Radio Cork. [2]

He joined RTÉ in 1977, and was part of the original line-up of 2FM, broadcasting on its first night on air. During his time with 2FM, he called himself "Mark Anthony" and presented a variety of shows, from the seminal Night Train to the Drivetime show. [2] In 1985 he won a Jacobs' Award for his midnight radio show. [4] [5] In 1989 he joined the new 98FM, staying there for seven years. He joined Today FM in 1998 and then joined TV3 Ireland. [2] [6] He won the TV Personality of the Year Award in 2005 at the 3rd Irish Film and Television Awards. [7] [8] he hosted the breakfast show Ireland AM on TV3 since it started in 1999. [9]

In July 2019, it was announced that Cagney would be leaving Ireland AM at the end of July after twenty years with the programme. [10] On 31 July 2019 Cagney presented his last Ireland AM alongside Karen Koster and Alan Hughes. The show dedicated the last half hour to him and aired a highlights reel. All the production crew, including Ciara Doherty, who was on maternity leave at the time, came in to wish Cagney good luck in his future endeavours.

Cagney has filled in for Ivan Yates on his Hard Shoulder drive-time radio show on Newstalk. As of 2021, Cagney is the Station Imaging Voiceover of Newstalk

Personal life

He lives in Bayside, Dublin in the north County Dublin with his second wife Audrey and their four children. His first wife, Ann, whom he met when he was 19, died of a brain haemorrhage; the couple had been married 11 years. When Ann died, Cagney was devastated; Audrey, who worked with him at 98 FM, provided emotional support, which turned into love. [2]

Health

When Cagney discovered he was having difficulty hearing, he went for testing; the results showed he had hearing loss. He was fitted with a hearing aid, and in 2008, chose to make the information public. [11]

Cagney was a heavy user of cocaine in the 1980s. [12] [13]

Cagney has been diagnosed with genetic haemochromatosis (iron overload), which, unknown to him in his early years with Ireland AM, caused him constant fatigue. [14]

RTÉ 2fm, or 2FM as it is more commonly referred to, is an Irish radio station operated by RTÉ. The station specialises in current popular music and chart hits and is the second national radio station in Ireland.

He is the long-running presenter of the breakfast show on Today FM, self-titled The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, which runs from 6-9 am each weekday. RTÉ broadcaster Gerry Ryan died on 30 April 2010, aged 53. Ryan had been presenting The Gerry Ryan Show since 1988 and at the time of his death had the largest audience on RTÉ 2fm. Ryan also hosted several television series, including Secrets, Gerry Ryan Tonight, Ryantown, Gerry Ryan's Hitlist and Operation Transformation and Ryan Confidential, as well as one edition of The Late Late Show in 2008. Ryan co-presented the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 with Cynthia Ní Mhurchú. He died sixteen years later at his Upper Leeson Street apartment in Dublin, with his body found by his partner Melanie Verwoerd. The broadcaster had split from his wife Morah in 2008; the couple had five children together.

<i>Chris and Ciara</i>

Chris and Ciara, formerly titled Bottom of the Barrel, is an Irish radio show on RTÉ 2fm hosted by Chris Greene and Ciara King. It is broadcast on Saturday and Sunday starting at 11am, and consists of contemporary hits and comedic pop culture-focused talk segments. The show features film and celebrity news quizzes and a "Rap Off" in which Greene and King compete, as well as interviews and guests such as 2fm's Emma Power and DJ Mo K, Brian M. Lloyd from entertainment.ie, Blindboy Boatclub of The Rubberbandits, and the self-styled dating expert the Galway Player. King reads from her teenage diary every Wednesday, and the presenters often read text messages and tweets sent by listeners.

Ciara Kelly is an Irish radio presenter, columnist and former GP. She presents the morning show on Newstalk. She also has a weekly column with the Sunday Independent.

Aoibhín Garrihy, Ailbhe Garrihy and Doireann Garrihy are Irish social media influencers, having played different roles in the entertainment industry. Aoibhín is an actress, having played Neasa Dillon in RTÉ One's Fair City from 2010 to 2013. She was a finalist in the first series of the Irish version of Dancing with the Stars. Ailbhe is a publicist. Doireann is a comedy impressionist, known for two series of The Doireann Project, and radio and television presenter, hosting the revival in 2018 of RTÉ Two's The Podge and Rodge Show.

Louise McSharry is an Irish broadcaster and disc jockey known for her work on RTÉ 2fm.
