John V. Azzariti Jr. (born February 1, 1966) is an American physician and Republican Party politician serving as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly for the 39th legislative district, having taken office on January 9, 2024.
A resident of Saddle River, New Jersey, Azzariti earned his undergraduate degree at Case Western Reserve University and received his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School. He is employed as a physician anesthesiologist. [1]
Azzariti served on the Saddle River borough council from 2019 to 2023 after having served on the borough's board of health from 2009 to 2018 and on the zoning board of adjustment in 2018. [1]
In 2021, after Holly Schepisi announced that she would leave her Assembly seat to run for the Senate seat that became vacant following the death of Gerald Cardinale, Azzariti ran to fill the second Assembly seat with Schepisi's support, but the Republicans chose DeAnne DeFuccio. [2] After DeFuccio announced in 2023 that she would not run for re-election for a second term, Azzariti again received Schepisi's support and won the Republican convention for the second Assembly seat with incumbent Robert Auth. [3] [4] Auth and Azzariti defeated Democrats Damon J. Englese and John F. Vitale in the 2023 New Jersey General Assembly election. [5] [6] Azzariti was one of 27 members elected for the first time in 2023 to serve in the General Assembly, more than one-third of the seats. [7]

Saddle River is a borough in Bergen County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is a suburb of New York City, located just over 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Manhattan. The town is known for its natural fields, farmland, horse farms, forests, and rivers, and has a bucolic atmosphere, due in part to a minimum zoning requirement of 2 acres (0.81 ha) for homes. The borough contains both stately historic homes and estates, as well as newer mansions. It offers many spacious properties in a countryside-like setting, while also having proximity to New York City.

As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 5,888, an increase of 138 (+2.4%) from the 2010 census count of 5,750, which in turn reflected an increase of 268 (+4.9%) from the 5,482 counted in the 2000 census.

Gerald Cardinale was an American Republican Party politician, who served in the New Jersey State Senate from 1982 until his death in 2021, representing the 39th Legislative District. He also served one term in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1980 until 1982. At the time of his death, he was the second-most senior senator in the state, behind Richard Codey, who also came to office in January 1982, but had served in the General Assembly since 1974. Cardinale was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1984, 1988 and 1992 and served as a Delegate to the New Jersey Republican State Platform Committee in 1983.

Holly T. Schepisi is an American lawyer, businesswoman, and Republican Party politician who is the New Jersey State Senator, representing the 39th legislative district. She previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly, from January 10, 2012, until March 24, 2021. She has served as Deputy Minority Leader since January 14, 2020, and served as Assistant Minority Leader for two years before then. She resides in River Vale with her husband Paul Garfinkel and their two children. In March 2015, she suffered a brain aneurysm but fully recovered after surgery in the summer of 2015. On March 9, 2021, she was chosen to succeed long-serving Senator Gerald Cardinale in the State Senate, who died in office. She was sworn in on March 25, 2021.
