Jena Powell (born December 25,1993) is an American politician who has served in the Ohio House of Representatives from the 80th district since 2019.
Jena Powell is from a farming family in southern Darke County. She received a bachelor's degree from Liberty University in Business and worked at the billboard company founded by her brother. [1]
Powell said she was motivated to run for state office because of frustration with zoning regulations related to billboard placement. [2] Powell secured 75% of the vote in the 2018 General election,making her the youngest state representative in Ohio. [3] She subsequently was featured in the 2019 Forbes 30 under 30 list in the category of law and policy. [4]
Powell opposed Governor Mike DeWine's face mask mandate,writing,"No. It's our freedom and it's being ripped from us through executive force." Powell responded positively to the Union City Police Department announcing that they would not be enforcing the governor's orders,writing,"Great news!" on their Facebook post. [5]
In February 2020,Powell proposed Bill 61,Save Women's Sports Act,which prohibits transgender women and girls from competing in women's sports. [6] Her attempt to add an amendment to the Name,Image,and Likeness bill failed. In June,DeWine signed an executive action allowing college athletes in Ohio to earn money off their name,image and likeness,bypassing Senate Bill 187,as well as Powell's amendment.[ citation needed ] DeWine went on record opposing the amendment,saying:"The welfare of those young people needs to be absolutely most important to this issue,whether that young person is transgender or not." In 2019,Powell co-sponsored HB 413,legislation that would ban abortion in Ohio and criminalize what they called "abortion murder". Doctors who performed abortions in cases of ectopic pregnancy and other life-threatening conditions would be exempt from prosecution only if they "[took] all possible steps to preserve the life of the unborn child,while preserving the life of the woman. Such steps include,if applicable,attempting to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy into the woman's uterus". Powell was a member of the so-called “Team Householder” candidates supported by Larry Householder in the 2018 primary elections. [12] Powell’s campaign received $20,416 from Householder’s campaign, $16,430 from indicted Householder associate’s law firm JPL & Associates, $12,700 from First Energy Corp PAC and $12,500 from Murray Energy PAC. [12] A Householder aligned PAC called Growth and Opportunity spent $27,135 on mailers benefiting Powell. [12] Powell voted for Householder for speaker of the house. [12] In July 2020, Householder was arrested by the FBI on federal bribery and racketeering charges in connection with Ohio House Bill 6. [13]
In June 2021, Powell was one of 21 lawmakers that voted in opposition of Larry Householder’s expulsion from the Ohio House of Representatives.

A six-week abortion ban, also called a "fetal heartbeat bill" by proponents, is a law in the United States which makes abortion illegal as early as six weeks gestational age, which is when proponents claim that a "fetal heartbeat" can be detected. Medical and reproductive health experts, including the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, say that the reference to a fetal heartbeat is medically inaccurate and misleading because a conceptus is not called a fetus until eight weeks after fertilization, as well as that at four weeks after fertilization, the embryo has no heart, only a group of cells which will become a heart. Medical professionals advise that a true fetal heartbeat cannot be detected until around 17 to 20 weeks of gestation when the chambers of the heart have become sufficiently developed.
Timothy E. Ginter is an American politician serving as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Ohio House of Representatives. He has served in the House of Representatives since 2015, representing District 5. Ginter is an ordained minister, and has also worked in various other occupations. He ran against Jason Wilson in 2008 for the Ohio Senate, but lost. In 2014, Ginter replaced Craig Newbold as the Republican candidate for state representative in the 5th district. Ginter went on to defeat incumbent Democrat Nick Barborak in the 2014 general election with 59% of the vote. Abortion in Kansas is legal. Kansas law allows for an abortion up to 20 weeks postfertilization. After that point, only in cases of life or severely compromised physical health may an abortion be performed, with this limit set on the belief that a fetus can feel pain after that point in the pregnancy. The state also had detailed abortion-specific informed consent requirement by 2007. Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) law applied to medication-induced abortions and private doctor offices in addition to abortion clinics were in place by 2013. In 2015, Kansas became the first state to ban the dilation and evacuation procedure, a common second-trimester abortion procedure. State laws about abortion have been challenged at the Kansas Supreme Court and US Supreme Court level. On August 2, 2022, Kansas voters rejected a constitutional amendment that would have allowed the Republican-controlled legislature to restrict or ban abortion in Kansas, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Abortion in Ohio is legal up to the point of fetal viability. A six week ban enacted prior to the passage of November 2023 Ohio Issue 1 is being challenged in court following abortion rights being placed into the Ohio State Constitution. In November 2023, a constitutional amendment was approved by a majority of voters that enshrined access to abortion in the Ohio Constitution. Despite the constitutional amendment, the Republican leaders of Ohio have defended the six-week abortion ban in courts.

The Ohio nuclear bribery scandal (2020) is a political scandal in Ohio involving allegations that electric utility company FirstEnergy paid roughly $60 million to Generation Now, a 501(c)(4) organization purportedly controlled by Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Larry Householder in exchange for passing a $1.3 billion bailout for the nuclear power operator. It was described as "likely the largest bribery, money laundering scheme ever perpetrated against the people of the state of Ohio" by U.S. Attorney David M. DeVillers, who charged Householder and four others with racketeering on July 21, 2020. According to prosecutors, FirstEnergy poured millions into the campaigns of 21 candidates during the 2018 Ohio House of Representatives election, which ultimately helped Householder replace Ryan Smith as Republican House speaker.
