Jawaharlal Nehru Port, also known as JNPT and Nhava Sheva Port, is the second largest container port in India after Mundra Port. [4] [5] Operated by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Authority (JNPTA), it is located on the eastern shores of Arabian Sea in Navi Mumbai, Raigad district, Maharashtra. This port can be accessed via Thane Creek, a nodal city of Navi Mumbai. [6] It is the main port of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after Mumbai Port, also of Maharashtra and Western India. Its common name derives from the names of Nhava-Sheva (new sheva) village that is situated here. It is also the terminal of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
As of January 2023, the port is undergoing upgrades with the help of a loan agreement signed between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Private Limited (NSFTPL). The loan of $131 million will be used to improve the terminal's infrastructure, increase its container handling capacity, upgrade existing berths and yards, and install energy-efficient equipment. The upgrades aim to attract vessels and make international trade more efficient, transparent and sustainable. [7]
The port was established on 26 May 1989 and became the second largest and premier container handling port in India, [8] [9] surpassing the capacity of 4 million TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) in containers between 2016 and 2021.
JNP consists of a full-fledged customs house, 30 container freight stations and connectivity to 52 inland container depots across the country. The hinterland connectivity both by rail and road is being further strengthened by ongoing projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), which will increase the existing train capacity from 27 to 100 trains per day; Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) and widening of the port's connecting roads. Its proximity to the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune; airports, hotels, exhibition centres, etc. gives the port an edge in efficiency and promptness to address the shippers’ needs.
In 2006, the port implemented the logistics data tagging of containers. [10]
JNPT houses India’s best logistics connectivity with facilitation from container freight stations and logistics parks owned by government as well as private players namely Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation, DRT, Gateway District Park, Allcargo, Avashya, Continental Warehousing, Ameya Logistics, TransIndia and Contegrate Entrepot. JNPT authorities have been trying to implement direct port delivery model of the containers, a first of its kind model promoted to ease doing business in India.
The JNP Trust (JNPT) Container Terminal was originally operated by JNPT. It has a quay length of 680 metres (2,230 ft) with 3 berths. [11]
In 2023 Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Private Limited commenced operations of the terminal (renamed to the NSFT terminal) and plans to enhance it to handle 1.8 million TEUs by 2025. [12]
The Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) was originally leased to a consortium led by P & O, a part of DP World. Commissioned in July 2000, it has a 600 metres (2,000 ft) quay length with two berths. It was intended to handle up to 62.15 million tonnes of cargo. [13] NSICT was India’s first privately managed container terminal.
In the year 2006, GTI (Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd) commissioned a third container terminal operated by APM Terminals, with the capacity to handle 1.3 million TEUs.
The fourth container terminal, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), is developed and operated by PSA International. Phase 1 with capacity of 2.4 million TEUs was completed in Dec 2017. The terminal was planned to have full capacity of 4.8 million TEUs p.a. and a quay length of 2,000 meters with the completion of Phase 2.
A new standalone container terminal by the name of NSIGT, having a quay length of 330 meters and a capacity of 0.8 million TEUs was operational in July 2016.
Major exports from Jawaharlal Nehru Port are textiles, sporting goods, carpets, textile machinery, boneless meat, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The main imports are chemicals, machinery, plastics, electrical machinery, vegetable oils, and aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. The port handles cargo traffic mostly originating from or destined for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, as well as most of North India.
Uran is a coastal town in Raigad District's Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra state in Konkan division. It lies to the east of Mumbai across the Dharamtar Creek. Uran is primarily a fishing and agriculture village, which has developed into the special economic zone of Uran. The primary languages spoken are Agri and Koli which is a dialect of Marathi-Konkani.
Chennai Port, formerly known as Madras Port, is the second largest container port of India, behind Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port also known as Nhava Sheva. The port is the largest one in the Bay of Bengal. It is the third-oldest port among the 12 major ports of India with official port operations beginning in 1881, although maritime trade started much earlier in 1639 on the undeveloped shore. It is an artificial and all-weather port with wet docks. Once a major travel port, it became a major container port in the post-Independence era. An established port of trade of British India since the 1600s, the port remains a primary reason for the economic growth of Tamil Nadu, especially for the manufacturing boom in South India, and has contributed greatly to the development of the city of Chennai. It is due to the existence of the port that the city of Chennai eventually became known as the Gateway of South India.
Kamarajar Port, formerly Ennore Port, is located on the Coromandel Coast, Chennai about 18 km north of Chennai Port. It is the 12th major port of India, and the first port in India which is a public company. The Kamarajar Port Limited is the only corporatised major port and is registered as a company. Chennai Port Trust acquired around 67% stake of Centre in the Kamarajar Port Limited on 27 March 2020. The remaining 23 percent was already held by the Chennai Port Trust.
The Dronagiri is a node of Navi Mumbai in Raigad district. It is located at the Southern tip of Navi Mumbai metropolis and spread over 1,250 hectares of land. The zone is located to the east of Uran town in Navi Mumbai, and is bound by the Karanja River on the south-east. Residential areas are located to the west and north-west of the zone, while the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) area and township are located towards the north of the zone. The zone is adjacent to the JNPT port, and is located farthest from the central business districts of Belapur, Nerul and Vashi. Due to its proximity to the port, this zone is ideal for port-based industries.
Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd is a multi-cargo terminal located on Pulau Indah, Port Klang, Malaysia which is accessible by road via Pulau Indah Expressway, connecting to the KESAS Highway. On 1 October 2013, Pulau Indah was directly connected to the Malaysian Administrative Capital, Putrajaya via the South Klang Valley Expressway.

Rewas(Rewas-Bodani or Revas) is one of 48 “minor” ports of Maharashtra located at Rewas Creek, near Karanja creek at mouth of the Patalganga River about 10 kilometres (6 mi) southward of Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) south-east of Mumbai Port. It is controlled by the state government through an agency known as the “Maharashtra Maritime Board”.
Mumbai Port is a port which lies midway on the west coast of India, on the natural deep-water Mumbai harbour in Maharashtra. V. O. Chidambaranar Port is a port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, and is one of the 12 major ports in India. It was declared to be a major port on 11 July 1974. It is the second largest port in Tamil Nadu and third largest container terminal in India. V.O. Chidambaranar Port is an artificial port. This is the third international port in Tamil Nadu and it is second all-weather port. All V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority's traffic handling has crossed 10 million tons from 1 April to 13 September 2008, registering a growth rate of 12.08 per cent, surpassing the corresponding previous year handling of 8.96 million tons. It has services to USA, China, Europe, Sri Lanka and Mediterranean countries. The Station Commander, Coast Guard Station Thoothukudi is located at V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, Tamil Nadu under the operational and administrative control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), Chennai. The Coast Guard Station V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority was commissioned on 25 April 1991 by Vice Admiral SW Lakhar, NM, VSM the then Director General Coast Guard. The Station Commander is responsible for Coast Guard operations in this area of jurisdiction in Gulf of Mannar. V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority Thoothukudi is an ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code compliant port.
The Port of Colombo Sinhala: කොළඹ වරාය, Tamil: கொழும்பு துறைமுகம் is the largest and busiest port in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean. Located in Colombo, on the southwestern shores on the Kelani River, it serves as an important terminal in Asia due to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean. During the 1980s, the port underwent rapid modernization with the installation of cranes, gantries and other modern-day terminal requirements.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu and colloquially known as Atal Setu, is a 21.8 km (13.5 mi) 6-lane grade separated expressway bridge, which connects Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. It is the longest sea bridge in India, and the world's 12th longest sea bridge. The bridge begins in Sewri, South Mumbai, crosses Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island, and terminates at Chirle near Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka, Navi Mumbai. The road is linked to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway in the east and to the Coastal Road in the west. The 6-lane highway is 27 meters in width, in addition to two emergency exit lanes, two edge strips, parallel crash barriers and noise barriers on both sides. The project costs a total of ₹17,843 crore (US$2.1 billion). The bridge has a capacity to handle 70,000 vehicles per day. Construction on the bridge began in April 2018, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 January 2024.
Dharamtar port, commonly known as JSW Dharamtar Port is on the right bank of the Amba river and is 10 miles (16 km) from its mouth. Approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) from Wadkhal village on NH-17. The port is 0.5 km (0.31 mi) from the state highway that runs through Pen to Alibag and is 2 km (1.2 mi) away from National Highway 17 (Mumbai—Goa). The port is also adjacent to Mumbai–Goa–Konkan railway line with an approved rail siding. It is a tri-modal port with rail.
Mundra Port is India's first private port, largest container port and largest commercial port, located on the northern shores of the Gulf of Kutch near Mundra, Kutch district, Gujarat. Formerly operated by Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited (MPSEZ) owned by Adani Group, it was later expanded into Adani Ports & SEZ Limited (APSEZ) managing several ports. In FY 2020–21, Mundra Port handled 144.4 million tonnes of cargo. The port currently handles over 155 MT, which constitutes nearly 11 per cent of India’s maritime cargo. The port also handles nearly 33 per cent of India’s container traffic.

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor or Western DFC is a 1,506 km long, under-construction 1,676 mm freight corridor in India. It will connect Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai, Raigad District, Maharashtra. The corridor is being built by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a public-sector unit (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways and would be electrified with double-line operation. The Western DFC entails a new single-line branch from Prithla in Palwal district to Tughlakabad in Delhi, running parallel to the existing New Delhi–Faridabad–Palwal railway line.
Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) is a proposed planning area in Raigad district of Maharashtra, an Indian state. City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) has been appointed planning authority for the same. It comprises approximate 170 villages in Pen, Panvel, and Uran talukas of Raigad district. The city will consist of small cities that will be hubs for agro-farming, education, trade, information technology, services, medical treatment, etc. This city is being developed in fulfilment of the conditions under which environmental clearances were given by the Ministry of Environmental & Forest (MoEF), Government of India that development plan for Navi Mumbai be modified to prevent unplanned development in the vicinity of the proposed airport. NAINA enjoys proximity of Navi Mumbai and has influence of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), JNPT and proposed transport corridors viz. Multi Modal Corridor, Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL), Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), SPUR etc.
Nhava Sheva railway station is a railway station in Navi Mumbai's Raigad district, Maharashtra. Its code is NHVSV. It will serve JNPT and Nhava Sheva area of Navi Mumbai. The station has two platforms.
Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) is a key policy initiative of the Government of India, led by National Highways Logistics Management Limited under Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), to develop Multi-Modal Logistics Parks in hub-and-spoke model to improve the country's freight logistics sector by lowering overall freight costs and time, cutting warehousing costs, reducing vehicular pollution and congestion, improving the tracking and traceability of consignments through infrastructural, procedural, and information technology interventions.
Jalna dry port is a dry port located near Jalna, Maharashtra, India. It has been developed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The facility was inaugurated on 12 March 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be operated and maintained by CONCOR National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and JNPT have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Jalna Dry Port in Maharashtra.
Vadhavan Port is a proposed deep sea port at Vadhavan in Palghar district of Maharashtra. The port will be built on coast of the Arabian Sea; the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is responsible for the construction of the port. After the construction of the port, it will be one of the deepest sea ports in India after Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram, and will have more draft depth than Port of Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. It is estimated that the construction of the port will cost of ₹76,220 crore (US$9.1 billion). Vadhavan will be constructed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited, a special purpose vehicle. Jawaharlal Nehru Port will have a 74 percent stake in the project and Maharashtra Maritime Board will have 26 percent in a public private partnership.
