Although women have participated in boxing for almost as long as the sport has existed, female fights have been effectively outlawed for most of boxing's history until recently, with athletic commissioners refusing to sanction or issue licenses to women boxers, and most nations officially banning the sport. Reports of women entering the ring go back to the 18th century.
The Golden Gloves of America is an organization that promotes annual competitions of amateur boxing in the United States, in which winners are awarded a belt and a ring, and the title of national champion. The organization currently owns 30 franchises. Hundreds of administrators, coaches, trainers and counselors participate, involving gyms and programs in local and regional tournaments throughout the United States and in a National Tournament of Champions each year. The Golden Gloves is a term used to refer to the National Golden Gloves competition, but can also represent several other amateur tournaments, including regional and state tournaments, such as the Chicago Golden Gloves, and the New York Golden Gloves, and the Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves.
England Boxing, known until 2013 as the Amateur Boxing Association of England, is the only governing body of amateur boxing clubs in England. There are separate organisations for Scotland and Wales with boxing in Northern Ireland being organised on an All-Ireland basis. The Association was founded in 1880.

He was born in Iran which he represented at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics. After moving to the United States and becoming an American citizen, he won the Chicago Golden Gloves three times.
Ali Mazaheri is an amateur boxer from Iran, who competed in the 2006 Asian Games in the Heavyweight division and won the gold medal in the final bout against Uzbekistan's Jasur Matchanov 25–19. Mazaheri won the gold medal of the 2007 Ulan Bator in the Heavyweight division.

Leonard Leisching was a boxer from South Africa, bronze medalist at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and gold medalist at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. Nasser Aghaie was an Iranian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1963. He participated as a member of this team at the first Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in 1963, and at the 1964 Summer Olympics, in the Flyweight division, and at 1966 Asian Games, in the Featherweight division, and also at the third Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Colombo, Ceylon in 1967.

Akbar Khojini, was an Iranian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1956, and was also a member of Tehran Jafari Club, boxing in the 81 kg division. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Light Heavyweight division, and also at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in 1963, in which he won the silver medal of the 81 kg boxing division, after losing to Ali Barkat from Pakistan, in the final. Khojini was also selected for the Light Heavyweight division of the Iranian national boxing team, to participate in the 1962 Asian Games. In Tokyo 1958, Khojini lost to Sultan Mahmoud from Pakistan, in the quarterfinal, and won the bronze medal of the 81 kg boxing division. Khojini retired from championship boxing and the Iranian national boxing team, after returning from the 1963 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok.
