The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs was a ministry of the South African government, responsible for the relationship between the national government and the provincial governments and municipalities, and for overseeing the traditional leadership of South Africa's indigenous communities. In December 2009, it was divided into two departments for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Dr Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma is the minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs and was appointed on 29 May 2019.

Mileham was re-elected to Parliament in 2024.

Along with the Department of Traditional Affairs, it is within the political responsibility of the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), who is assisted by a Deputy Minister of Local Government. As of August 2020 the minister is Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her deputy is Parks Tau.

A member of the African National Congress, he has been a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since February 2019. Cwaile had previously served as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the legislature.

A member of the Democratic Alliance, he was the party's Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2020 until 2023 and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 2019 to 2023. He was the party's Shadow Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs between 2019 and 2020.
Siphosihle Emmanuel Hlomuka is a South African politician who is the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, having been appointed in June 2024. He served as the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs from May 2019 to August 2022 and then as the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison from August 2022 until June 2024. Hlomuka was sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature in May 2019. He is the deputy provincial secretary of the African National Congress.
Phalama Jacob Mamabolo is a South African politician of the African National Congress. He was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in the 2014 election, and was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement and COGTA. He served in this position until his appointment as the MEC for Infrastructure Development in February 2016. Mamabolo became the MEC for Roads and Transport in 2019. In October 2022, Mamabolo was promoted to MEC for Finance. Following the 2024 provincial election, he was appointed MEC for Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Prince Zolile Burns-NcamasheAa! Zweliyajika! is the son of Chief Sipho Burns-Ncamashe Aa! Zilimbola!, a South African politician and a member of the South African National Assembly for the African National Congress. Following the death of ANC MP Tozama Mantashe, he assumed a position in the National Assembly as the next MP on ANC's Eastern Cape list.
