Canoeing and Kayaking were held at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, China from October 2 to October 5. Men's and women's competition were held in Kayak and men's competition in Canoe. The competition included only flatwater events.

Canoe slalom is a competitive sport with the aim to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging downstream or upstream gates on river rapids in the fastest time possible. It is one of two kayak and canoeing disciplines at the Summer Olympics, and is referred to by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Canoe/Kayak Slalom. The other Olympic canoeing discipline is canoe sprint. Wildwater canoeing is a non-Olympic paddlesport.

The ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships are an international event in canoe racing, one of two top-tier Summer Olympic sport events organized by the International Canoe Federation. They are usually held every non-Olympic year and have officially included paracanoe events since 2010; paracanoe-specific editions of this event are usually held in Summer Paralympic years.

Canoeing has been featured as competition sports in the Summer Olympic Games since the 1936 Games in Berlin, and they were also demonstration sports at the 1924 Games in Paris. There are two disciplines of canoeing in Olympic competition: slalom and sprint.

Canoe and kayak were held at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar from December 10 to December 14. Men's and women's competitions were held in kayak and men's competition in canoe with all events having taken place at the West Bay Lagoon. The competition included only flatwater events.

The 1986 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Montreal, Canada at the Notre Dame Island. This is also where the canoeing and rowing competitions for the 1976 Summer Olympics took place.

The 1990 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Poznań, Poland, on Lake Malta.

The 1991 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Paris, France from 21 to 25 August 1991.

The 1994 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Mexico City, Mexico for the second time at neighboring Xochimilco. The Mexican city had hosted the event previously in 1974 at the same venue that hosted the canoeing and rowing competitions for the 1968 Summer Olympics.

The 2001 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Poznań, Poland at Lake Malta. The Polish city had hosted the event previously in 1990.

The 2013 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships was held 29 August–1 September 2013 in Duisburg, Germany. The championships were awarded originally to Szeged, Hungary, but Szeged was moved to 2011 in the wake of Vichy, France's withdrawal in 2010 and awarded to Rio de Janeiro, who withdrew in September 2012. Consequently, the World Championships were awarded to Duisburg.

Canoeing and Kayaking were held at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea from October 10 to October 12. Men's and women's competition were held in Kayak and men's competition in Canoe with all events having taken place at the Nakdong River Rowing and Canoeing Courses. The competition included only flatwater events.

Canoeing at the 2010 Asian Games was held in Guangzhou, China from November 13 to 26, 2010. Men's and women's competition were held in Kayak and men's competition in Canoe with all events having taken place at the International Rowing Centre.

Canoeing and kayaking in India has become a popular sport. The Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) is the governing body of the sport in India.

Canoeing and Kayaking were held at the 1994 Asian Games in Yachiyo Lake, Hiroshima, Japan from October 5 to October 10. Men's and women's competition were held in Kayak and men's competition in Canoe. The competition included only flatwater events.

Canoeing and Kayaking were held at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand from 8 to 11 December. Men's and women's competition were held in Kayak and men's competition in Canoe with all events having taken place at the Map Prachan Reservoir in Chonburi. The competition included only flatwater events.

The men's K-1 slalom canoeing competition at the 2014 Asian Games in Hanam was held from 1 to 2 October at the Misari Canoe/Kayak Center. The slalom event was on flat water and not an artificial canoe slalom course. The K-1 event is raced by one-man kayaks. Each NOC could enter two athletes but only one of them could advance to the semifinal.

The 2017 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, the 43rd edition of the World Championships, were held in Račice, Czech Republic, from 23 to 27 August 2017.

The 2019 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, the 45th edition of the World Championships, were held in Szeged, Hungary from 21 to 25 August 2019.

The 2022 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships took place from 26 to 31 July 2022 in Augsburg, Germany under the auspices of International Canoe Federation (ICF). It was the 42nd edition. The events took place at the Augsburg Eiskanal. Augsburg hosted the championships for the fourth time after previously hosting in 1957, 1985 and 2003.

The 2022 European Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom Championships took place in České Budějovice, Czech Republic from 11 to 14 August 2022 under the auspices of the European Canoe Association (ECA). It was the 24th edition of the competition for Juniors (U18) and the 20th edition for the Under 23 category. The Czech Republic hosted the event for the first time. A total of 20 medal events were held.
