The Bundesverband Musikindustrie (English: Federal Music Industry Association), or simply BVMI, represents the music industry in Germany. The association represents the interests of nearly 280 labels and music industry related enterprises, which comprise 90% of the music industry. [3] It is a member of the London-based International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), consisting of music associations of 70 countries. [3]

BVMI works closely with GfK Entertainment (formerly Media Control GfK International, founded in 1976) which is in charge of publishing the music charts in Germany on weekly bases. [4] BVMI, which is responsible for certifying Gold and Platinum certification awards, is led by Dieter Gorny  [ de ], who has been the chairman since 2009. [1]

Certification-awards

Germany launched its Gold and Platinum award program in 1975, and relies on an independent auditor for the accuracy of the sales required for the awards. [5]

While the BVMI has been the certifying body in Germany for the past few decades, BVMI was not always in charge of certifying the records there. Phono Press also known as ZVEI (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie) was the body in charge of tracking records sales and the certifications. [6] During the 1970s and 1980s, the certification levels for singles in Germany were 500,000 units for Gold and 1,000,000 units for Platinum, while the certification levels for albums were 250,000 and 500,000, respectively. BVMI instituted Diamond award on 1 June 2014 and applied the award to titles released starting from 1 January 2013. [10]

Starting also from 1 June 2014, BVMI raised its certification-award-levels for the Singles, from the previous 150,000 units for Gold and 300,000 units for Platinum to 200,000 units for Gold and 400,000 units for Platinum. The change in the certification-levels of the Singles was affected by both inclusion of Streaming as well as an increase in sales of downloads that has been seen in recent years. [10] 100 streams with the running time of at least 30 seconds or more, are considered as one single download. [10]

BVMI follows the following pattern to certify records:

The association does not issue awards for 2× Gold or 4× Gold, which overlie the requirements of platinum certification awards. [5] Sales of both physical and digital, whether it is an album or a single, can be included for certification.

German singer Xavier Naidoo began his music career in the early 1990s. His debut studio album, Seeing Is Believing, was released in 1994, consisting mostly of cover versions of traditional tracks and soul songs from the 1960s and 1970s. Released in the United States only, it failed to chart on the Billboard 200 and thus, was never released in Europe. Following a fall-out with main producer Nicole Dürr, he signed with Frankfurt am Main-based Pelham Power Productions (3P) and began appearing as a background vocalist on several of his label-mates' albums. Naidoo's second studio album Nicht von dieser Welt, produced unter the guidance of Moses Pelham and Martin Haas, was released in May 1998. The album peaked at number one on the German Albums Chart and sold more than a million copies. Its singles included his debut single "20.000 Meilen", the top twenty entries "Nicht von dieser Welt" and "Seine Straßen" as well as top five hit "Sie sieht mich nicht", which served as the theme song for the feature film Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar (1999). A gold-certified live album of his first concert tour, simply titled Live (1999), reached the top ten in Germany the following year.

German recording artist Cassandra Steen has released five studio albums as a solo artist. Steen began her career as lead vocalist of pop trio Glashaus who released their self-titled debut album in 2001 and scored the top five hit "Wenn das Liebe ist" the same year. She released her first solo album, Seele mit Herz (2004), during the hiatus of the band on band member Moses Pelham's 3–P label. It reached the top sixty of the German Albums Chart and produced the singles "Wie du lachst" and "Alles was du willst", both of which failed to chart or sell noticeably.

After her participation in the reality television series Sing meinen Song - Das Tauschkonzert in 2014, the German version of the series The Best Singers, Connor was encouraged to record songs in German. Muttersprache debuted on top of on the German Albums Chart, marking her second number-one album following 2005's Naughty but Nice. Muttersprache is primarily a pop and R&B album.

Produced in a period of two years, during which Catterfeld was cast in a main role in the soap opera Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, she worked with a variety of musicians on the album, including Dieter Bohlen, Lukas Hilbert, Udo Lindenberg, Laith Al-Deen, Annette Humpe, Ingo Politz, and Bernd Wendlandt, among others.
