William Scott Miller (born May 31, 1967) is an American Major League Baseball umpire who began his career in the American League in 1997. [1] Miller wears number 26. He has been a crew chief since the 2014 season.
Miller graduated from UCLA with a history degree in 1989. He umpired in the Northwest League, Arizona Instructional League, South Atlantic League, California League, Texas League, International League, and Pacific Coast League before reaching MLB in 1997. [2] While umpiring in the International League, Miller was robbed at gunpoint at a hotel. [3]
Miller has officiated in seven Wild Card Games (2012, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2024), eleven Division Series (2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, 2023, nine League Championship Series (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2024), and five World Series (2010, 2013, 2017, 2020, 2023). [2] He also officiated the 2007 and 2022 All-Star Games and twice in the World Baseball Classic (2009, 2013).
On May 15, 2012, Miller was involved in an altercation with Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie during his last at-bat. With a 3–1 count, pitcher Fernando Rodney threw two balls, based on replays [4] and computerized strike zone analysis. [5] Lawrie headed toward first after each pitch, but Miller called the pitches strikes and ejected Lawrie after he protested the strikeout. Lawrie then threw his helmet, which bounced off the ground and hit Miller. Miller also ejected Blue Jays manager John Farrell. Blue Jays would end up losing the game. After the game was over, Miller was hit by a cup of beer thrown by a fan as he was walking back to the umpires locker room. It's not known if the fan was punished. [4] [6] The next day, Major League Baseball suspended Lawrie for four games. [6]
Miller was chosen as one of the umpires for the one-game Wild Card playoff between the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers on October 5, 2012. [7]
Before the 2014 season, he was named a crew chief by Major League Baseball. [8]
Miller was the home plate umpire for Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Vólquez's no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 3, 2017. [9] In 2019, he was named President of the Major League Baseball Umpires Association, succeeding Joe West.
Miller graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 1989, and resides in Incline Village, Nevada. [2] He was a three-sport athlete at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, California, and was Athlete of the Year in Santa Cruz County his senior year. [10] He is an alumnus of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Gerald Sidney Davis is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball. He worked in the National League from 1982 to 1999 and in Major League Baseball from 2000 to 2021. He was promoted to crew chief in 1999. Davis worked a total of 151 post season games,the most in MLB history. He umpired six World Series, eleven League Championship Series and thirteen League Division Series. He also worked in the All-Star Game four times.Davis was chosen to work a Special Event in an All Time record 24 consecutive seasons. He wore uniform number 12 throughout his career.
Joseph Henry West, nicknamed "Cowboy Joe" or "Country Joe", is an American former baseball umpire. He worked in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1976 to 2021, umpiring an MLB-record 43 seasons and 5,460 games.
Edward Michael Montague is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball. He worked in the National League in 1974 and from 1976 to 1999, and officiated throughout both leagues between 2000 and 2009. The most senior active umpire in the major leagues at the time of his retirement, he wore uniform number 11 throughout his career. His 4,369 total games ranked eighth in major league history when he retired, and he is one of only three umpires to serve as crew chief for the World Series four times.

Fieldin Henry Culbreth III is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball (MLB). He worked in the American League from 1993 to 1999 and in both major leagues from 2000 until his retirement in 2021. Culbreth was promoted to crew chief prior to the 2013 season. Culbreth wore number 42 while he was an American League umpire, then changed to 25 in 2000 after the MLB umpires were unified into one crew.
Kerwin Joseph Danley is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball who worked in the National League (NL) from 1992 to 1999 and throughout both leagues from 2000 to 2021. He wore uniform number 44. He was promoted to crew chief for the 2020 season, becoming the first full time African-American crew chief. Danley has umpired in the 2008 and 2018 World Series and the 2007 and 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Games. He is married to Marisa Danley.
Todd Frederick Tichenor is an American professional baseball umpire. He became a Major League Baseball reserve umpire in 2007 and was promoted to the full-time MLB staff in 2012. He wore number 97 until the 2014 season, when he switched to number 13.
Samuel Woodford Holbrook is an American retired Major League Baseball umpire. He made his MLB debut in 1996 and was promoted to crew chief in 2017. Holbrook worked the World Series in 2010, 2016, and 2019. He retired following the 2022 season.
