The BTC-T MG ZS EX259 is a BTC-Touring class racing car that was built for the 2001 British Touring Car Championship season by West Surrey Racing, who ran MG's official works program.

Works career

Partway through the 2001 BTCC season, WSR began entering their BTCC spec MG ZS, returning as a works MG team under the name of MG Sport & Racing. [2] The new car's first appearance was in round 21, held at Silverstone, driven by Anthony Reid and Warren Hughes. [3] Although ineligible to score points, the car showed some initial promise, with a victory at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, the penultimate round of the season - indeed, it was the only non-Vauxhall entry to win in 2001. [4]

For 2002, WSR entered 4 cars - 2 MG Sport & Racing entries for Reid and Hughes, and a satellite team, racing under the "Team Atomic Kitten" banner, with Gareth Howell and Colin Turkington driving for this team. [5] The car proved to be reasonably competitive in its first full season; WSR finished 2nd in both the Teams and Manufacturers standings, and Reid finished 4th in the Driver's championship. [6] However, they were 151 points behind the Triple 8-entered Astra Coupes in the Manufacturers championship, as that team remained dominant.

For 2003, the team entered 3 cars for Reid, Turkington and Hughes, this time all entered as works drivers. [7] The season proved to be less successful than 2002 - with Honda Racing demoting MG to 3rd in both the Constructors and Teams standings, although MG once again won 3 races, with Reid slipping to 6th in the Drivers championship. [8]

Independent's career

After 3 seasons, MG withdrew their works support for WSR in 2004. [9] WSR, however, continued to enter a pair of MG ZS, driven by Reid and Turkington, whilst Jason Hughes entered an older ZS in his own Kartworld Racing team. [10] Using their 3 years of knowledge gained from developing the car, the team won the Independents championship, and also a 3rd place in the Team standings. [11] Anthony Reid was once again the best-placed driver, finishing an impressive 4th in the Driver's championship standings, and was crowned as the Independent champion.

With Turkington departing for VX Racing, and Reid being involved in an abortive MG entry for the 2005 DTM season, [12] WSR chose to enter a single car, driven by Rob Collard, [13] whilst Jason Hughes continued to enter his MG ZS, albeit at select events. [14] Despite a low budget, Collard impressed, managing to secure 2 wins, and he finished 7th overall. [15]

For 2006, Turkington returned to the team, [16] partnering the retained Collard. The team made the decision to switch to the facelifted ZS model, the A new sponsorship deal was struck with the RAC, with the team now entering cars under the Team RAC name. [17] A successful season followed, with Turkington finishing runner-up in the Independents, and finishing in a fine 3rd place overall. [18] Team RAC switched to the BMW 320si for 2007, [19] thus ending a 6-year partnership between MG and WSR. Kartworld Racing entered 2 cars, running on bio-ethanol, [20] in 2007 (driven by Hughes and Fiona Leggate), [21] reducing down to 1 for 2008, which would prove to be the cars final season in the BTCC.

2007 British Touring Car Championship

The 2007 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season was the 50th British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) season. It was won by Fabrizio Giovanardi with 10 race wins and 17 podiums. Going into the final race, Fabrizio Giovanardi was one point behind Jason Plato but a second place for Giovanardi and a fourth place for Plato resulted in Giovanardi taking the championship by 3 points. The Teams' championship was won by SEAT Sport UK, the Manufacturers' championship was won by Vauxhall, the Independents' Trophy was won by Colin Turkington and the Independent Teams' championship was won by Team RAC.

Colin Turkington Irish racing driver (born 1982)

Colin Henry Turkington is a British auto racing driver, who is currently competing in the British Touring Car Championship for Team BMW WSR in a BMW 330i M Sport. He lost his position as the reigning BTCC champion, after Ashley Sutton won in 2020, having won it the previous time in 2019. His most notable successes to date include becoming 2009 British Touring Car Champion driving for Team RAC and 2014 British Touring Car Champion driving for eBay Motors. He has also competed in the World Touring Car Championship and the inaugural Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. In 2013 he returned to the British Touring Car Championship with his current team, West Surrey Racing.

Rob Collard British racing driver

Robert Collard is a British auto racing driver from Hampshire, best known for racing in the British Touring Car Championship, winning two races in a West Surrey Racing MG, and claiming the Independent's Cup title in 2003. In 2008, he returned to running the series full-time, driving for the Motorbase Performance team, where he remained for 2009, before returning to West Surrey Racing. Collard also owns his own demolition firm, R Collard Ltd.

Jason Hughes is the owner-driver of the Kartworld Racing auto racing team, which has competed in the British Touring Car Championship from 2003 to 2008. In 1999 Hughes was BRSCC Fiesta Champion, and first entered the BTCC with a Nissan Primera in the Production Class.

BTC-T Vauxhall Astra Coupe

The Vauxhall Astra Coupe is a BTC-Touring class racing car that was built for the 2001 British Touring Car Championship season by Triple 8 Race Engineering, who ran Vauxhall's official works program. It was the first BTC Touring-specification car to be unveiled in late 2000. Triple 8 had worked on the Astra in the summer of that year and as a result, with 4 cars - 2 with Vauxhall sponsorship and 2 with Egg Banking sponsorship had given themselves a head start on the rest of the field at the start of the 2001 season. In the end, it was far more advanced in its development than anything else in the field, allowing to win 25 out of 26 races in 2001. A 3-way battle for the championship lasted throughout the season, with Jason Plato emerging victorious by 18 points. In fact, so dominant were the cars that the lowest placed Astra driver, Phil Bennett, who finished 4th in the Driver's Championship, was 58 points clear of the next driver.
