Andrew Fleming Green, Baron Green of Deddington, KCMG (born 6 August 1941) is a former British diplomat. He is the founding president of MigrationWatch UK, an organisation arguing for lower immigration to the United Kingdom. He has also held a number of positions with voluntary organisations.
Lord Green was educated at Haileybury before going up to Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he read Natural Sciences and Economics. He then took a three-year Short Service Commission in the Royal Green Jackets. [1]
On joining the Diplomatic Service in 1965, he studied Arabic in Lebanon. Thereafter, he spent half his career in the Middle East where he served in six posts. The remainder of his service was divided between London, Paris, and Washington DC. He was HM Ambassador in Syria (1991–94) and then Director for the Middle East at the Foreign Office, before serving for four and a half years as ambassador in Saudi Arabia. [1]
After his retirement in June 2000, Lord Green went on to co-found MigrationWatch UK [2] together with David Coleman, Professor of Demography at Oxford University. He was chairman from its establishment in December 2001 until July 2021 when he became president and the chairmanship was taken up by Alp Mehmet. [3]
He chaired Medical Aid for Palestinians (a British charity seeking to improve health care for Palestinians both in Palestine and in refugee camps) for three years. [4] He was for 12 years a board member of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (a human rights organisation which speaks for Christians and others around the world who are suffering persecution for their religious beliefs).[ citation needed ]
He was the co-chair of the lobbying group British Syrian Society, founded by President Assad's father in law Fawaz Akhras, until his resignation in 2011. [5] He was re-appointed as Director of the Society in 2018. [6]
He was appointed to the Order of St Michael and St George as a Companion (CMG) in the 1991 Birthday Honours [7] and was promoted as a Knight Commander (KCMG) in the 1998 Birthday Honours. [8]
On 21 October 2014 it was announced that Sir Andrew Green was to be created a life peer on David Cameron's personal recommendation for Green's "proven record of public service." [9] He was duly raised to the peerage as Baron Green of Deddington, in the County of Oxfordshire on 28 November 2014. [10] [11] Lord Green sits on the cross benches in the House of Lords.

Robert Haldane Smith, Baron Smith of Kelvin, is a British businessman and former Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Smith was knighted in 1999, appointed to the House of Lords as an independent crossbench peer in 2008, and appointed Knight of the Thistle in the 2014 New Year Honours. He was also appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2016.

John Olav Kerr, Baron Kerr of Kinlochard, is a British politician and former diplomat, now Deputy Chairman of Scottish Power and a crossbench member of the House of Lords. He was a member of the European Convention that first drafted what became Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force in December 2009.
General David John Ramsbotham, Baron Ramsbotham, is a retired British Army officer, who later served as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons. He was awarded a life peerage in 2005, and now sits on the cross benches of the House of Lords.
Cranley Gordon Douglas Onslow, Baron Onslow of Woking, was a British politician and served as the Conservative MP for Woking from 1964 to 1997, and a British Peer from 1997 until his death.
Caroline Anne Cox, Baroness Cox, FRCN is a cross-bench member of the British House of Lords. She is also the founder of an organisation called Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART). Cox was created a Life Peer in 1982 and was a deputy speaker of the House of Lords from 1985 to 2005, as well as being a minister in government. She was also a Baroness-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. She was Founder Chancellor of Bournemouth University, Chancellor of Liverpool Hope University from 2006-2013, and is an Hon. Vice President of the Royal College of Nursing. She was a founder Trustee of MERLIN Medical Emergency Relief International.
Roger Mellor Makins, 1st Baron Sherfield, GCB GCMG FRS DL, was a British diplomat who served as British Ambassador to the United States from 1953 to 1956.
General John Nicholas Reynolds Houghton, Baron Houghton of Richmond, is a retired senior British Army officer and former Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the British Armed Forces. He was appointed CDS in July 2013, following the retirement of General Sir David Richards. He served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the Green Howards in Northern Ireland during The Troubles and later became Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. He deployed as Senior British Military Representative and Deputy Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War. Later, he became Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters and served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff until assuming the position of CDS. Houghton retired from the British Army in July 2016, and was succeeded as CDS by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach.

He was the last professional head of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office before the creation of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. In November 2021, it was announced that he would be the next Master of Christ's College, Cambridge; he will take up the post in September 2022.
