Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, accolades were handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened at British cinemas in 2017. Following revelations of sexual harassment in the film industry, many attendees wore black or a badge to show their support for the Time's Up movement. [1]
The nominees were announced on 9 January 2018 by actresses Natalie Dormer and Letitia Wright. [2] The Shape of Water received the most nominations in twelve categories; Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri followed with nine each. [3] As with the 75th Golden Globe Awards, there was criticism for the lack of female nominees for Best Director, with Greta Gerwig notably not nominated for Lady Bird . [4]
English actress Joanna Lumley hosted the ceremony for the first time, replacing Stephen Fry following his twelve years of service as host. [5]
