On 12 August 2018, a mass shooting happened in the Manchester neighbourhood of Moss Side. The weapon used was believed by Greater Manchester Police to be a shotgun. There were no fatalities.
Moss Side was hosting the Manchester Caribbean Carnival over the weekend, with over 16,000 attendees on the Saturday. The annual event attracted more participants than usual as it marked the 70th anniversary of the Windrush generation. [2] [3] [4] Moss Side is described by a resident as a "volatile" inner-city area, with Sky News adding that it has "numerous gang territories and has long had problems connected with drugs and gun violence", though a local DJ interviewed about the incident said that "[i]t seemed like there was a general understanding over the last few years that everyone would just behave themselves" in Moss Side. [2]
Mass shootings are rare in the UK, with the most recent previous being a spree shooting in Cumbria in 2010, and the one before a school shooting in Dunblane in 1996. [5] The DJ interviewed said he had been alerted to the incident and come down because he wanted to "see this thing, because 10 people is a major thing in Manchester." [2] The most previous major violent crime in Manchester had been the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017, in which 22 people were killed.
Reports say shots were fired at 02:25 on Sunday, 12 August 2018, on Claremont Road, a street that runs for two miles through Moss Side. [2] Claremont Road is near Alexandra Park, the location of the festival, but the attack is seen as unrelated to the main festival, "just a street party". [2] [4] Police arrived on the scene "within a minute" according to sources, [2] [4] but a witness said that it was "quite a long time [before the police arrived] considering somebody had been shot", mentioning that there was "informal security" on the scene, and that "the ambulance was [probably] waiting for armed police [...] and then eventually the police did turn up". [4]
When the police arrived, they reported "several hundred" people in the area, with Chief Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry describing the street as "distressing". [2] One witness to the incident said that after he heard the first gunshot he thought it was "a balloon", [4] similar to the initial reports of the arena bombing the year before, [6] but then "heard two more and [...] went behind a wall" when he realised something dangerous was happening. [4]
The police believe that a shotgun loaded with pellets was used, and treated the incident as an attempted mass murder. [4]
Twelve people were injured, with ten hospitalised, and one of these in serious condition. Nine of those injuries were said to be gunshot pellet wounds, the other was a man's broken leg. Two of the injured were children, one aged 12 and the other a teenager. [4] Later in the day, Detective Superintendent Debbie Dooley confirmed that "most [of the injuries] do not appear to be life-threatening at this time". [2] Several people remained in hospital overnight. [7] [8]
On 11 September two men, aged 24 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and on suspicion of possession of a firearm. [9]
The Columbine High School massacre, often simply referred to as Columbine, was a school shooting and a failed bombing that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, United States. The perpetrators, twelfth-grade students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered twelve students and one teacher. Ten of the twelve students killed were in the school library, where Harris and Klebold subsequently died by suicide. Twenty-one additional people were injured by gunshots, and gunfire was also exchanged with the police. Another three people were injured trying to escape. The Columbine massacre was the deadliest mass shooting at a K-12 school in U.S. history, until December 2012. Columbine is still considered one of the most infamous massacres in the U.S. for inspiring many other school shootings and bombings; the word "Columbine" has since become a byword for modern school shootings. As of 2024, Columbine is still the deadliest school shooting in Colorado and one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States.
The Hungerford massacre was a spree shooting in Wiltshire and Berkshire, United Kingdom, which occurred on 19 August 1987 when 27-year-old Michael Ryan shot and killed sixteen people, including an unarmed police officer and his own mother, before killing himself. No firm motive for the killings has been established.

The Milperra Massacre, Milperra bikie shoot-out or Father's Day Massacre was a gunfight between rival motorcycle gang members on 2 September 1984, in Milperra, a south-western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. The gunfight had its roots in the rivalry that developed after a group of Comancheros broke away and formed the first Bandidos Motorcycle Club chapter in Australia. The Trolley Square shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on the evening of February 12, 2007, at Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. A gunman identified as Sulejman Talović killed five bystanders and wounded four others before being shot dead by several members of the Salt Lake City Police Department. Authorities were not able to determine a motive.
Obadyah Ben-Yisrayl is an American serial killer found guilty of committing four murders and acquitted on three other murder charges related to the "Shotgun Killer" spree in Indiana from October 30, 1990, to December 18, 1990.
Gun crime in south Manchester, England, largely took place in an inner city area south of Manchester city centre, from Hulme through Moss Side to Longsight, with further crime also taking place north of the city, in areas like Cheetham Hill. By the 1990s, the trade in illegal narcotics and firearms had given rise to the nickname "Gunchester", although from the late 2000s levels of gang related gun crime greatly reduced in the area, attributed to heavy sentencing of the main offenders, restricting the availability of firearms, community work and co-operation in tackling serious crime between agencies.
In July 1981, the inner-city district of Moss Side in Manchester, England, was the scene of mass protesting. The protests at Moss Side started at the local police station and later moved into the surrounding streets over two days. Ahmed Jaber Ali al-Qattan was a 16 or 17-year-old Bahraini who died in a hospital on 6 October 2011 after reportedly being hit in the chest, abdomen and upper limb by bird pellet gunshots fired by Bahraini security forces during the Bahraini uprising (2011–present). Several human rights organizations in Bahrain believe that the use of birdshot against humans is banned under international law, while the Ministry of Interior disagrees. The Ministry of Interior stated that there was a gathering of 20 people in Abu Saiba who blocked the roads and police men intervened to disperse them as authorized. Activists, however, began a series of large protests after his funeral.
Tyrone Mitchell was an American spree killer who fatally shot a student and a passerby as well as wounding twelve others who were leaving 49th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles on February 24, 1984. Mitchell then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a double-barreled shotgun.
The Manchester Caribbean Carnival has been held annually in Alexandra Park, Manchester, since 1971. The Moss Side area was, at that time, home to many recent immigrants from Caribbean countries.
At about 12:30 am on 21 June 2020, two young men were shot dead at a street party in Moss Side, an inner-city area of Manchester in North West England.
On 26 July 2020, 4 people were stabbed in Moss Side in Manchester, England. 17-year-old Mohamoud Mohamed died at the scene. The incident was the result of a gangland feud between Rusholme Crips and Moss Side's AO, or, 'Active Only'. Both gangs are believed to have grown out of Manchester's notorious Gooch and Doddington outfits.
On February 9, 2021, a mass shooting and bombing occurred at a medical clinic in Buffalo, Minnesota, United States. Just before 11:00 a.m. CST, Gregory Paul Ulrich, a 67-year-old man, shot five people at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads facility. One victim, Lindsay Overbay, died, and three others were critically injured from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were medical clinic staff. During the attack, Ulrich discharged three improvised explosive devices, one of which failed to detonate. He surrendered to police who were dispatched to the clinic, and he was taken into custody. He admitted to authorities that he fired on people inside the clinic and set off bombs.
On February 19, 2022, Benjamin Jeffrey Smith approached and assaulted a small group of women, at the edge of Normandale Park in Portland, Oregon, United States. He murdered one, caused the paralysis of another from the shoulders down, and seriously injured three others, including a bystander who had approached to deescalate.
The Wallasey pub shooting was a mass shooting on 24 December 2022 at 23:50 (GMT). The shooting occurred at the Lighthouse pub in Wallasey Village, a district of Wallasey, Merseyside, England. One person was killed and five others were injured, one critically.
