The 2015 North Texas Mean Green football team represented the University of North Texas as a member of the West Division of Conference USA diring the 2015 NCAA Division I FBS football season They began the season with Dan McCarney as head coach, in his fifth season, and played their home games at Apogee Stadium in Denton, Texas.

On October 10, McCarney was fired after a 66–7 blowout loss to FCS Portland State, [1] with offensive coordinator Mike Canales named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. [2] They finished the season 1–11 (1–7 in C-USA play) to place last in the West Division.

Schedule

North Texas announced their 2015 football schedule on February 2, 2015. The 2015 schedule consist of five home and seven away games in the regular season. The Mean Green will host CUSA foes Rice, UTEP, UTSA, and Western Kentucky (WKU), and will travel to Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, and Southern Miss. [4]

Following the 66–7 loss to FCS Portland State, Mean Green head coach Dan McCarney was fired. The 59-point margin is the biggest FCS win over an FBS team since Division I football was divided into the groupings now known as FCS and FBS in 1978. [6]

The North Texas Mean Green football program is the intercollegiate team that represents the University of North Texas in the sport of American football. The Mean Green began the season under fourth-head coach Todd Dodge, who was fired after the team started the season with a 1–6 record. Offensive coordinator Mike Canales was appointed interim head coach and led the team for the final five games of the season. North Texas finished the year with an overall record of 3–9 and a conference mark of 3–5, placing in a three-way tie for sixth in the Sun Belt. The Mean Green played home games on campus at Fouts Field in Denton, Texas. This was the team final season at Fouts Field as the team moved to the newly-opened Apogee Stadium in 2011.

Michael Sid Canales is an American college football coach and former player. He is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Southeastern University, positions he has held since 2023. He previously was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of North Texas, a position he held from 2010 to 2015. He became the interim head coach of the Mean Green twice, after the firing of Todd Dodge in 2010 and Dan McCarney in 2015. After a brief stint with Utah State in 2016, he was named the quarterbacks coach at the University of Tennessee in January 2017, reuniting with offensive coordinator Larry Scott, with whom he worked while at the University of South Florida. From 2018 until 2020, Canales was the offensive coordinator at the University of Texas at El Paso.

The Mean Green played their home games at the Apogee Stadium in Denton, Texas, and competed in the West Division of Conference USA (C–USA). They were led by first-year head coach Seth Littrell. They finished the season 5–8, 3–5 in C-USA play to finish in fourth place in the West Division. Because there were not enough 6-win bowl eligible teams, they received a bowl invitation as a 5–7 team with the highest APR score. They were invited to the Heart of Dallas Bowl where they lost to Army in overtime.

The season began on September 1 with Charlotte facing Louisville. This season was the second season for the C-USA under realignment that took place in 2014, which added the 14th member Charlotte from the Atlantic 10 Conference.
