Flavia Pennetta is an Italian former professional tennis player. She became Italy's first top-ten female singles player on 17 August 2009 and the first Italian to be ranked world No. 1 in doubles, on 28 February 2011. She is a major champion, having won the 2011 Australian Open women's doubles title with Gisela Dulko, and the 2015 US Open singles title over childhood friend Roberta Vinci in the first all-Italian major final.
Russia's Elena Dementieva defeated compatriot Dinara Safina in the final, 3–6, 7–5, 6–3 to win the gold medal in Women's Singles tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In the bronze medal match, Russia's Vera Zvonareva defeated China's Li Na 6–0, 7–5. This was the first Olympic medal sweep in tennis since 1908, when three British women won medals in the outdoor women's singles tournament. It was the fifth podium sweep in tennis in Olympic history, all previous sweeps were by British athletes. It was Russia's first victory in the women's singles. Dementieva became the third woman to win multiple Olympic singles medals, following Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and the first to do so in non-consecutive Games.
Ana Ivanovic was the defending champion, but was defeated by Vera Zvonareva in the final 7–6(7–5), 6–2, in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal.
The 2009 Sony Ericsson Open women's singles was the women's singles event of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, a WTA Premier Mandatory tennis tournament held in Key Biscayne, Florida in late March and early April. World No. 1 Serena Williams was the defending champion and attempting to win a record sixth title at the tournament, but she lost in the final to Victoria Azarenka, 6–3, 6–1. Azarenka won her third WTA singles title and first at the Premier or above level.
Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Dinara Safina in the final, 6–4, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2009 French Open. It was her second major title, after the 2004 US Open. The final marked the third all-Russian final in major singles history, and the first since the 2004 US Open. Safina fell to 0–3 in major finals with the loss. The match was also the conclusion of a series of matches between the pair during the preceding clay court season, with Kuznetsova beating Safina to win the title in Stuttgart, and Safina avenging the loss by beating Kuznetsova in Rome.
Irina-Camelia Begu is a Romanian professional tennis player. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 22 in the world, in August 2016. Two years later, she reached her highest WTA doubles ranking, also No. 22. Begu has won five singles titles and nine doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She also has won two singles titles on the WTA Challenger Tour, as well as 12 singles and 19 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.

Defending champion Serena Williams successfully defended her title, defeating Justine Henin in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles title at the 2010 Australian Open. It was her fifth Australian Open singles title and twelfth major singles title overall, surpassing the Open Era record for the most Australian Open singles titles. This was Henin's first major since the 2008 Australian Open, following her retirement in May 2008. Henin was unseeded at a major for the first time since the 2001 Australian Open and was awarded a wild card into the tournament.

The 2014 Kremlin Cup was a tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It was the 25th edition of the Kremlin Cup for the men and part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series of the 2014 ATP World Tour, and of the Premier Series of the 2014 WTA Tour. It was held at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia, from 13 October through 19 October 2014.
The 2015 Maria Sharapova tennis season officially began on 4 January 2015 with the start of the 2015 WTA Tour. Sharapova entered the season ranked as world number 2 behind Serena Williams following the completion of the 2014 season.

Williams won the title for the record 8th time in her career. It was her third French Open title, her 20th major singles title overall, and she completed the triple career Grand Slam with the win. Williams would later describe the victory as the proudest achievement of her career; she suffered from influenza during her title run.
Serena Williams defeated Garbiñe Muguruza in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. It was her sixth Wimbledon singles title and her 21st major singles title overall. With the win, Williams completed her second "Serena Slam", having won the preceding US Open, Australian Open and French Open. This also marked the first Channel Slam in women's singles since Williams herself in 2002.
Flavia Pennetta defeated Roberta Vinci in the final, 7–6(7–4), 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2015 US Open. It was her first major singles title, and she became the first woman to win her maiden major title after turning 30 years old. Pennetta was competing in her 49th major main draw, setting a new record for the most appearances in major main draws before reaching a final. This also marked Pennetta's last major appearance, as she retired from the sport at the end of the 2015 season. Vinci became the first unseeded woman to reach a major final since Justine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open. The final made Italy the fifth country in the Open Era to have two countrywomen contest a major final. This also marked the first final with two first-time major finalists since the 2010 French Open.

She also broke monopoly of Serena Williams. Angelique Kerber defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2016 US Open. It was her second major singles title. Kerber became the first player since Martina Hingis in 1997 to win both hard court majors in the same calendar year, having also won the Australian Open. She also attained the world No. 1 ranking for the first time after Serena Williams failed to reach the final. In addition to Kerber and Williams, Garbiñe Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwańska were in contention for the top ranking.
The 2017 Qatar Total Open was a professional women's tennis tournament played on hard courts. It was the 15th edition of the event and part of the WTA Premier series of the 2017 WTA Tour. It took place at the International Tennis and Squash complex in Doha, Qatar between 13 and 18 February 2017.
